There are places in Alaska that are beautiful. And then there are places that feel completely defined by water.

Tikchik Narrows Lodge sits in the heart of Wood-Tikchik State Park, surrounded by nearly 1.6 million acres of protected wilderness. The lodge itself is perched between Tikchik and Nuyukuk Lakes, with Chauekuktuli Lake, the upper Nuyakuk River and countless miles of streams and backcountry water all connected to the landscape around us. And that water has a story.

The northern Tikchik lake system drains through the Nuyakuk River before joining the Nushagak River and eventually reaching Bristol Bay. Every summer, salmon make that journey home, bringing life into the lakes and rivers and fueling an ecosystem that supports everything from rainbow trout and Arctic char to bears and eagles.

We get to watch that cycle happen right outside our front door. Sockeye moving through the Narrows. Trout feeding behind them. Bears working the shoreline. Eagles overhead.
This isn’t just a beautiful place to fish. It’s a living system, connected from the mountains to the lakes, down the Nuyakuk, through the Nushagak and ultimately to Bristol Bay. #TikchikNarrowsLodge #ExperienceTheLegend by @tikchiknarrowslodge

There’s a point in the season when you’re begging for them to show up, chrome and straight from the ocean.

Then, before you know it, they’ve completely transformed for their final journey to spawn and die. Bright red, hook jaws and all, they slowly replenish everything from our favorite game species to the wildlife that depends on them.

The season has officially wrapped up, but it took no shortage of hard work, long days, and breaking down camps before everyone finally made it back home and into civilization.

After a long season working in one of the most remote corners of western Alaska, it’s easy to understand why our guides and staff almost forget what it feels like to actually finish the season.

We’re sure there are plenty of guides at lodges across the state who reach this point in September and know the feeling. The fishing is still some of the best of the season, the fall colors are turning up the dial and changing by the day, but after 100+ days on the water, the end of the season starts to creep in. Some mornings, it takes an extra cup of coffee before the gears really start turning.

But there’s something about the annual cycle of spending a few months in one of the most spectacular places in the world, breaking everything down, and finally heading home that puts Alaska into perspective.

Being disconnected from so much of the technology that constantly pulls us away from the moment, spending day after day on the water with incredible guests as they experience Alaska for the first time, and simply living this life for a few months is something there really isn’t much like.

Then, just as quickly as it started, the season comes to an end—and you head home with a much better appreciation for what the last few months were really all about. #TikchikNarrowsLodge #ExperienceTheLegend by @tikchiknarrowslodge
