International Theatre of the Oppressed Day
Today, March 16, 2026, Augusto Boal would have turned 95. Brazilian theatre director, playwright and researcher, Boal dedicated his life to developing a theatre that not only represents reality, but allows people to analyze it and transform it collectively.
In the 1950s - 60s Brazil was experiencing profound social and political tensions. Augusto Boal worked at the Arena Theatre of São Paulo as director and dramaturg. In that time, he encountered the Brazilian educator Paulo Freire, author of Pedagogy of the Oppressed (1968), whose ideas influenced Boal’s search for a theatre where spectators could become active participants rather than passive observers.

In 1964, a military coup established a dictatorship in Brazil. Augusto Boal was arrested in 1971 and later forced to leave the country.

During those years in exile he continued developing his work across Latin America and Europe, working with communities, educators and social movements.

In this context of dictatorship, exile and political struggle, Theatre of the Oppressed was born.

Over the following decades the practice continued to grow and evolve. To explain it, Augusto Boal used the metaphor of a tree that reminds us how Theatre of the Oppressed is a living and evolving practice.

Theatre of the Oppressed was born during a time of crisis with a revolutionary proposal: collective process of creation and reflection to stimulate the research of strategies to overcome injustice.

Crisis is danger and also an opportunity for transformation.

Nowadays its tools are used around the world to analyze oppression, rehearse change and create spaces for democratic participation.

Waterbodies — in the environment and within us

directed by @barbara.kuringa and @tillbaumann_berlin

🗓 October 21, 19:00
📍 Grüner Salon, Volksbühne Berlin
Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz 2

A journey uncovering stories of resilience, ecological injustice, and how denialism fuels polarization and extremism.

The play employs feminist aesthetics and multidimensional languages — sound, rhythm, image, word — to reveal the interconnections between environment and society.

Breaking the “fourth wall,” the staging invites the audience into a shared aesthetic space, transforming spectators into collective experience and opening an interactive dialogue with the audience.

As part of the HEIMATEN FESTIVAL FÜR PLURALE DEMOKRATIE project at Haus der Kulturen der Welt @hkw_berlin , KURINGA, in collaboration with @romatrial , presents the performance WATERBODIES…
in the environment and within us:

🗓 Sunday, September 14
⏰ 3:30 PM
📍 Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW), Berlin

This theatre piece traces the journey from the Spree to the Baltic Sea, moving through cities to reveal stories of exploitation, resilience, and ecological injustice. Using feminist aesthetics and multidimensional languages —sound, rhythm, image, and movement— it goes beyond words to show how ecological denialism fuels polarization and extremism.

The staging breaks the “fourth wall”: the aesthetic space integrates the audience, creating a collective experience.

After the performance, a Collective Forum will open as an interactive space between stage and audience.

August 18th to 23rd, KURINGA’ week of artistic expression, aesthetic interaction, and collective dialogue at @uferstudios_tanz_berlin

An encounter of stories of resistance and resilience with theatre #performances workshops, labs of dramaturgy, qualification course and sessions of collective forum. Through artistic languages, the event promotes creative connections and aims both personal and collective transformation.

Theatre Performances: artistic productions where image, word, sound, rhythm and movement are choreographed to stage provocative and urgent social questions — such as racism, toxic masculinity, migration and systemic violence — to invite the audience for a collective reflection about possible alternatives.

Workshops and Labs of Dramaturgy: spaces to reflect, embody, and experiment aesthetics of transformation rooted in Theatre of the Oppressed and Teatro de las Oprimidas.

Collective Forum: after the forum theatre presentations the auditorium becomes a rehearsal ground, a space of hope, community, participation and shared agency. The audience members join together to discuss the topics represented on stage aiming to devise strategies to confront it. The theatre piece will be re-enacting with the participation of the audience members who will try out their ideas on stage, as a collective rehearsal for the transformation of reality.

The “KURINGA week at UFER_STUDIOS” embodies #aesthetics of transformation, artistic production, collective learning and political dialogue, where theatre becomes a platform for encounters and solidarity.

Thank you to all participants of Invisible Theatre – Workshop | Action | Reflection (26-29 March 2025) for their amazing creativity and courage!

During the workshop we created scenes on racism and anti-queer discrimination which we performed several times on Saturday 29 March in Berlin public transport.

The performances were exciting practical examples of Invisible Theater as political action in public space which gave us a lot of food for reflection.

Looking forward to remaining in contact and hearing from more experiences of Invisible Theatre!
