There is always something magical and special about the sight and even sound of a traditional sailing vessel under canvas.
To be able to observe and also sail onboard the 1923 built Thames Sailing Barge 'Lady Daphne' along the River Medway was a privilage.

What a fantastic day yesterday. To see five historic Thames barges arriving in Burnham on Crouch was a truly moving experience. All our thanks to the crews and skippers of these amazing boats, to everyone who helped get the day organised and running smoothly, the delicious hog roast @essexhogroastsltd, plenty of beer from @wibblers_taproom, and, of course the fabulous Brandy Hole Shanty Singers for keeping us all entertained. A special mention to the @burnhamsailingclub for hosting us all. Same again next year?! by @tillerandwheel

We were treated to such beautiful, live music from Roan Kearney-Lawson, composed specifically for our trip🎹

Such a special night to celebrate dad turning 80 earlier in the year✨

This is what T&W is all about - for the Thames Match, we handed Lady Daphne over to our youth squad, with skipper Oli the senior man at 31.

And they showed what the next generation of bargemen and women can do - Champion Coasting Class and 2nd only to Niagara overall.

What a day! ⛵

Last week, 8 young people from The Anchor had the incredible opportunity to spend the afternoon aboard Lady Daphne, a traditional Thames sailing barge, thanks to @tillerandwheel

For many of them, it was their very first-time sailing and they didn’t just watch, they got stuck in! From taking the helm and steering the barge, to hauling sails, winding winches, and even taking time for some riverside doodling, everyone played their part. It was an Anchor full of new experiences, teamwork, laughter, and confidence-building.

Best of all, the trip was completely free for every young person who came along thanks again to Tiller & Wheel.

We’re so proud of everyone who gave it a go and made the most of this amazing opportunity.

The Anchor will be back in September, and we’d love to welcome more young people to join us!

⛵ SAILING WITH THE MEDWAY ⛵

Join us aboard incredible 100-year-old Thames sailing barges (@tillerandwheel & @raybelcharters) as part of the pilgrimage flotilla. We'll sail through the Medway estuary's creeks, saltmarsh and historic dockyards, hearing stories of the river's history along the way. Midway through the journey, we'll come together on each boat to create a gift for the Medway - weaving our prayers and dreams for the river into something positive to leave behind.

Something really lovely is coming together on the Medway.

After a hard winter, T&W are now operating three active barges on the Medway, recreating an almost lost spectacle for this area.

There is so much more to do to bring the master plan together - we need to keep building our community, generate more investment and keep working on the ships, but it's lovely being part of a project making progress.
