Over the last six months, Tilottama led workshops with a group of 18 children from Karm Marg. Tilottama created a playful space for participants to explore and experiment with visual storytelling - building characters they resonate with, writing their dreams and aspirations, working on the gestures and expressions of the characters and finally creating stop-motion animation films.

It was lovely to see all the teachers, staff members and students from Karm marg to come together to see the artworks students created and the little animation films they made.

Posted @withregram • @fica_india Announcing ‘Kala aur Kitabein’ — a collaboration with Artreach, TARA Outreach Centre, and Mehrauli Community Library, supported by Yashodhara Dalmia!

We are very pleased to announce an eight month art program at FICA Reading Room, in collaboration with Artreach India, for a mixed group of children from the Mehrauli Community Library and TARA Outreach Centre. Tilottama from the Artreach team will lead monthly workshops for the children, each centred around different themes related to libraries, books and their spaces. The program will invite participants to build their relationship with books and explore artistic activities to foster the development of their imagination. We thank Yashodhara Dalmia for supporting this program. Our association with Ms Dalmia goes back a long way to 2011 when she supported the Ila Dalmia FICA Research Grant over a period of seven years. It is always very special to renew such partnerships, and we thank her for making these sessions possible.

Meet our collaborators:

Artreach India is one of the leading arts education non-profits, established in Delhi in 2015. They empower participants through creativity, providing holistic enriching learning experiences in visual arts. Artreach teaches artistic skills to talented young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, helping them pursue careers in the arts.

TARA Outreach Centre is a daycare for children aged 3-18 from Saidulajab. The Centre offers a secure environment where children engage in educational and extracurricular activities, health sessions, and life skills training. TARA also focuses on family strengthening through counselling and guidance, ensuring children receive support at home as well. Their vision is to enable children and families to live a life of self-reliance and dignity.

Mehrauli Community Library serves nearly 1500 first-generation learners from migrant families. With 5000+ books, it provides children access to reading material and schoolwork support. The Library also attracts artists and performers who host free weekend workshops. Run by a small team of staff and volunteers, it believes in the right to access good books. by @tilottama_

What a wrap to the Open Day!

We were happy to have you all at the Open Day of Kala aur Kitabein 2025–26 at the FICA Reading Room.

Throughout the day, children were busy installing their artworks, setting up selfie zones, and curating their work on the walls. Through typography, mark-making, zines, and scroll painting, they explored foods, places, monuments, vehicles, memories, plants, and livelihoods.

The day was filled with a film screening, a shared meal, a walkthrough, and an open mic performance, where children shared awareness around consent through storytelling, rap, song, and dance.

Kala aur Kitabein is a collaboration between Artreach India and FICA, supported by Yashodhara Dalmia. Over the past year, children from three community library spaces came together for regular art workshops, guided by artist educators Jyothidas K V and Tilottama B.

A wonderful and vibrant Sunday was spent at the FICA Reading Room, celebrating the Open Day for Kala aur Kitabein, an Artreach India and FICA programme supported by Yashodhara Dalmia.

As the second year of the programme came to a close, we gathered at the Reading Room to reflect on the year and celebrate all that the children had learnt, explored and experienced with artist educator @jyothidaskv , and @tilottama_ from the Artreach team. The children took over the library for the day, moving from wall to wall, deciding how their artworks would be displayed.

One wall of the Reading Room became a dictionary of Delhi – a collection of words, feelings, places and things that the children associate with the city. From Humayun’s Tomb, Yamuna ghat to momos and rajma chawal, the dictionary captured the many different things that make Delhi home.

The library also came alive with stories of trees and our various associations and memories with them – like seeing an especially magnificent one on the way to one’s grandmother’s home. Maps of the neighbourhoods surrounding the participating libraries, and pop-up books opened into entire worlds of their own.

The children prepared speeches, performances and skits for the group, sharing their experiences and ideas with remarkable confidence. The day ended on a suitably celebratory note – with dancing and a samosa party!

As Kala aur Kitabein enters its third year, we are delighted that our small group of children from Lado Sarai, who have been regular visitors to the FICA Reading Room for the past year, will also be participating. They are eager to make new friends and share their own experiences of the space.

We look forward to seeing this growing group of young readers continue to build confidence, curiosity and a sense of belonging through art-making – and to discover all the new worlds they will create together.

The exhibition of the children’s work is on display at the FICA Reading Room up till 31st August.

With participants from @mehrauli_community_library , @tara_childprotection and @kitabein_bolti_hain .

“How can we explore knowledge through unlearning?” Tilottama B, one of the 12 writers and image-makers who participated in The Third Eye’s EduLog programme, explores this thought through the feminist lens. ‘Do You See What I See?’ is the story of an inquisitive young girl who imagines in freeform and colour, even as traditional education tries to put her in boxes that instill fear.

For two weeks across May and June, the Reading Room was filled with conversation, laughter, movement, and debate, as children from our Lado Sarai neighbourhood gathered each day for the FICA Summer Camp.

Led by artist-educators Nilanjana Nandy, Tilottama B. and Kaur Chimuk, the camp brought together 15–20 children of different ages to create, experiment and spend time together. There was much excitement in the weeks leading up to the camp; the children made posters, invited friends, planned performances, and even debated who the library belonged to more – often based on who had discovered it first. A heartening piece of evidence that the Reading Room was fast becoming part of their everyday lives.

The first week with Nilanjana Nandy introduced new materials, techniques and ways of looking. The children expressed themselves through paper masks (with delightful, kooky features), traced their portraits on butter paper to make pop art avatars of themselves, and composed watercolour landscapes based on their walk from home to the library, amongst other exercises.

In the second week, the children collectively created a publication with Tilottama B, reflecting on questions like: What do we do in the library? What do we want from it? Who does it belong to? Through writing, drawing and discussion, they imagined the library together, producing a publication titled Milte Milte Aa Gaye, that became both a record of their experiences and a collective vision for the space.

The workshops culminated in an Open Day with a screening of My Neighbour Totoro, dancing, singing, and an exhibition of the children's work for their parents and families. We imagined the Open Day as an important moment of listening for FICA. We wanted to establish this as a meeting point to help us understand how the Reading Room is perceived within the neighbourhood we occupy. As we continue imagining a long-term programme for young people, these exchanges help us think about how the Reading Room can become not just a space in Lado Sarai, but one meaningfully shaped by the people who live here.

The Summer Camp was organised under FICA’s new programme Reading / Commoning. by @tilottama_

Finally, as we speak of this day, it takes us back to memories

A bright yellow sun 🌞 , preparations at play, arranging materials together to complete a final piece.

What unfolded over six months became a journey of strong friendships, mutual learning, and collective care among the young learners and facilitators alike. Bursts of energy soaked the fabric with reflections through colour, stories, and shared imagination.💭

And a special shoutout to the cake that kept us held within this beautiful inertia of creative engagement. 🥮

Kala aur Kitabein is a year-long programme with workshops led by artist Jyothidas KV and facilitated by Tilottama B from the Artreach team.
An Artreach India and FICA collaboration, supported by Yashodhara Dalmia.

Art became our language, and libraries became spaces to connect. Through this workshop, members from different libraries came together to create, learn, exchange ideas and visit each other’s spaces.

Every art form is a way of expressing ourselves and every shared moment became a chance to build new connections.
Creating together, learning together and growing together.

Through the intimate acts of drawing, writing, stitching, and map-making, this six-month engagement created a safe ‘learning hut’ for introspection, allowing participants to chart their own emotional geographies and share their hopes.

The engagement wove the floating, transient nature of memory into a tangible tapestry of livelihood. The core motivation revolves around ancestral knowledge, care for one’s surroundings, the dream of offering hope, the challenges faced in everyday life, and the rituals through which they find their strength.
