We are pleased to welcome Drew Austin as the prompter for our first roundtable of the season “SPACE: The Artist as Curator,” exploring how artists not only make work but also shape the environments in which that work is experienced.

As we continue to investigate how creative voices construct meaning in times of change and uncertainty, this roundtable turns toward the artist‑curator — a figure who blurs creation, arrangement, and interpretation. Drew Austin brings an interdisciplinary lens rooted in sculpture, drawing, light, and years of curatorial practice across Denver’s arts spaces.

New to our website is a piece by Elle Hong, detailing her relationship with social media and dance.

In her own words, “Dance insists on being present when you make, perform, and receive it. It calls upon our ability to participate in choice-making, It calls upon our ability to make another choice, to move the body in ways that resist prescription. As an audience member, you are asked not simply to consume a work but to participate in its meaning. That meaning exceeds the performance itself, taking shape through the images, memories, and sensations that accumulate as the dance unfolds through time.”

Tilting West opens tomorrow at the Arvada Center!

It has been an honor to partner with the Arvada Center on this large-scale group exhibition, which reimagines the American West through a contemporary lens.

Bringing together artists whose work challenges, expands, and redefines what “the West” means today, the exhibition explores themes ranging from environmental change and social commentary to identity, history, and place.

Join us and many of the artists for the opening reception tomorrow, June 4, from 6–9 PM at the Arvada Center. The exhibition will be on view through August 23, 2026, filling the Main Gallery and Upper Gallery as part of the Arvada Center’s 50th Anniversary celebration, alongside Colorado’s 150th and the United States’ 250th anniversaries.

Tilt West will also be hosting a roundtable conversation inspired by the exhibition on July 14—stay tuned for more details. by @tiltwest

In response to our past roundtable, CHANGE: The Body as Battleground, Ileya Grosman, PhD, an artist-scholar-practitioner with nearly 20 years of experience in student advocacy, farm-to-community initiatives, and coalition development, wrote an article detailing the impact of the roundtable about a month after the conversation.

In her own words, “I recently attended my first Tilt/West dialogue and now have the honor to share my experience. To preface, I attended over a month ago, and the experience still unfolds within me. Yet I feel this moment seeping into my bones like marrow nourishing new growth, stretching and expanding them. Before I share a poem from what resonated most that evening, I provide context to help illuminate the sensorial experience in the hope that your curiosity about the body, your body, and the humanness of existing continues to leave you in wonder and deep curiosity.”

In response to our past roundtable on CHANGE: Deconstructing American Values, John Van Wyck, an organizer with a background in policy research, political advocacy, and the arts, examined who benefits from the values written in our founding documents.

In his own words, “there’s another story of America that for many feels much more real, and that was also discussed. This story, told by those we might call our rememberers, is of a country founded on originating sins that have never been reckoned with, their perpetrators never brought to justice, their victims never given restitution or even acknowledgment. In fact, much of the country likes to pretend it never committed any sins at all.”

We’re honored to share work by incarcerated artists Dennis Cochran, Jason Cuomo, Eric Laurson, and Rick Ragels in Tilting West, a new exhibition with the Arvada Center and Tilt West.

Through paintings and drawings of landscapes they cannot physically access, these artists explore memory, longing, resistance, and connection to the natural world. Their work invites us to reconsider the mythology of the American West through the realities of incarceration and the enduring power of creativity.

Exhibition Dates: June 4 - August 23, 2026

Opening Reception: Thursday, June 4, 2026 6–9 PM (RSVP at link in bio)
Round Table- Hosted by Tilt West: July 14, 2026, 6 - 8:30 PM (RSVP at link in bio) taken in Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities by @tiltwest

In response to our past roundtable CHANGE: Disability, Change, and Time @heatherdschulte reflects on systems of care and the relationship between healthcare and space exploration.

In her own words, “disabled oracle Alice Wong states, ‘vulnerable ‘high-risk’ people are some of the strongest, most interdependent, and most resilient people around.’ She was describing persons living with disabilities, though we tend to refer to astronauts in similar ways. Astronauts, however, get to choose to adapt to high-risk, inhospitable environments, and receive vast amounts of support to make it happen.”

Every year Tilt West commissions artworks and articles from people in our community, available for free on our website.

This most recent article “Blood Work” by Natalie Sharp confronts the writer’s fraught past as a young Jehovah’s Witness when a health issue throws her relationships to education, authority, and her own body into question.
