Currently hitchhiking from South Africa to Norway with @the__hitchhikers

A couple of months ago I packed up my things, put them on my motorcycle and drove to Tenerife to work in film for a couple of months.

I started studying color, scraped some of my freelance photo money together and bought a little cinema camera and editing software to do some of my own projects outside of my work for the studio.

These are the first frames of my new camera. They’re from a walk to, in my opinion, the most beautiful building in Tenerife (by gpy arquitectos).

We just made it to Angola.

I was a bit scared to come here because of what people told us about this country. We would get robbed, scammed and maybe even killed.

But after spending a few days here, meeting locals and experiencing the country for myself, I realised how wrong those stereotypes were.

We arrived in Lubango at Roberto his place. He was a complete stranger at first, but now his place feels like home to me.

We joined a running competition together and I broke my personal record. But what surprised me the most was that a running competition here is followed by a party with unlimited beers? You know that I loved that part!

But mom, i also realise that it aren't only the running competitions that are different from what we are used to at home.

Here, electricity goes out almost every day. Fuel stations run dry. People struggle to get cash out of banks. Families have to fetch water from a waterhole water on their heads because their small wooden homes have no tap access.

And it makes me think about life back in Belgium.

We complain when the Wi-Fi stops working or when the train is late. We’re so used to having these things that we forget they’re privileges.

And the strange thing is… the people here, despite their own struggles, have welcomed us with so much kindness.

I came here a little bit afraid of the people.

But instead, they’ve made me reflect on myself.

Maybe travelling isn't just about discovering the world, Mom.

Maybe it's about appreciating what we already have… and how easily we forget it.

Voicemails for friends and family #1

Hi mom, it’s me

We met 2 French women yesterday. They call themselves ‘the twin sisters’. You’d love them.
They stopped for us in the middle of the desert and treated us like long lost family.

A newly formed group of vagabonds, traveling through the strangest landscapes we’d ever seen.

I have to get used to the kindness of the people meet. We share meals, tea and stories, and enjoy the safety of each other’s company.

I’ve spent the last months making myself small and trying not to take up too much space.

Accepting the kindness of strangers is overwhelming, and receiving it even more.

While looking for a place to sleep in Springbok, South Africa, we met Fabian.

There was something about the smile on his face that made us feel he wanted to help. So we walked up to him and asked if he knew of a place where we could spend the night.

He immediately called his wife to ask if we could spend the night. She said no. But Fabian decided to help us anyway and took us to his house in Concordia.

There, we were able to sleep in his newly built home and finally get some much-needed rest.

The next morning, we had a deep conversation with Fabian. He told us about his journey and how he became the person he is today, and how much his life has changed in the last couple of years.

A beautiful story about an even more beautiful person.

We’re incredibly grateful that our journey brought us to Fabian, and that we got to share this little piece of life together. ❤️ taken in South Africa by @tim_oosterlynck

We shared stories with a stranger called Marnie after jumping in the back of a pick-up truck going towards the Namibian border with South Africa.

He told us about working in the diamond mines, his kids and what it’s like to grow up in South Africa.

This is one of his stories that stuck with us, about the death of his parents and how it shaped his view on apartheid in South Africa.

We’re Cor & Tim, and we’re attempting something that sounds slightly ridiculous:

Travel from the Cape of Good Hope to Nordkapp without taking a single plane or bus, and without booking a single hotel.

Only strangers can take us and give us a place to sleep.
And we have 100 days to make it all the way north.
Every morning, we’ll have to find someone willing to drive us.

We genuinely have no idea if we’ll make it.

But that’s exactly why we’re doing it.

A palletteke of @toutbienpils took a wrong turn. 🇧🇪🍺🌍

It was supposed to end up in Norway 🇳🇴.
Instead… it landed all the way in South Africa 🇿🇦. 😅

So @averagerob came up with a solution:

Send @the__hitchhikers to get it back.

From the Cape of Good Hope 🇿🇦 to Noordkapp 🇳🇴, @the__hitchhikers have 100 days to cross the entire world from Africa to Europe, relying on nothing but strangers, their thumbs, and a ridiculous amount of trust.

No flights.
No fancy transport.
No guaranteed plan.

Just two hitchhikers, one mission, and a palletteke of Belgian beer that absolutely needs to make it to Norway before christmas. 🍻

Last year I took a job at a film studio that left me with some unexpected free time.

I was living in a little house on a mountain with a motorcycle, 2 surfboards and a bunch of time I didn’t know what to do with.

So naturally, I strapped the boards to the motorcycle and spent most of the winter looking for empty waves and driving through the forests.
