I’m better at living than posting. Obviously! šŸ˜ But I have so many travel stories I want to share with you, so promise to get better.

Here’s a peek: In the last two months I have watched whales at the Cape of Good Hope off the tip of the African continent, seen a leopard in Krueger National Park eating its meal in the branches of a tree while a pregnant hyena waited below for bones to drop, hiked down to the bottom of Victoria Falls in Zambia, found my roots in Ireland while hiking along the Cliffs of Moher on a private path with a local farmer, ate dinner in the home of a woman who escaped being burnt as a witch in Kilkenny in 1324, taught a travel journal writing workshop in Dingle, fell in love with medieval Bruges (and came up with an idea for another novel,) returned to my hometown in Connecticut after 46 years for a high school reunion, and visited my boys in college. I have met some wonderful people along the way and had some inspiring adventures. They are all waiting to be written about.

What has became very clear to me is that I need to make space for writing: for my own stories and for the writers I coach. I’ll be starting a newsletter for those of you who want more than social media can provide. If you’re interested, sign up on my website (link in bio)

The most amazing travel experience I have probably ever had was giving solar lamps to families in Uganda without electricity for their children to use to do their homework. These kids are the light of their communities’ futures and I know having light in their homes is absolutely life changing for them.

While it is life changing for them, it was also life changing for me.

I met Alice Min Soo Chun, the inventor of the Solarpuff lamp at the Women’s Travel Festival in NYC this year where we were both speakers. She gave me 10 lamps to hand out in Uganda on my recent trip and it was the highlight of my year. (I am so disappointed that my iPhone was stolen before I was able to get on Wi-Fi to back up the amazing footage I have of all the families I met in the process; it was beautiful and emotional.) Thank you. Alice! You are my hero!

I have considered dropping everything I’m doing if I can figure out a way to hand out solar lamps around the world, lighting up villages, taking homes out of darkness, and supporting the education and health (no need for toxic kerosene or wood smoke) of children.

1.6 billion people in the world have no electricity in their homes, either because they can’t afford it or because there is literally no infrastructure in place to bring electricity to a community. These sustainable solar lamps bypass that and change everything.

I’ll share more about it as I figure out how to incorporate this project into my future, and let you know ways you can be involved, too.

It’s so hard to write a post about having to say goodbye to someone you love. But I can’t not share a tribute to my mom. She was an amazing human being and I am going to miss her tremendously. Her consistent ability to share joy and appreciation, even during the most challenging situations, was a superpower, and lifted up everyone around her. She was the kind of mother who was interested in everything her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren did, and cheered them on with enthusiasm. We knew, without a doubt, that she loved us and thought everything we did was amazing. She and my dad had a 74 year love story that was inspiring and beautiful. She was also creative, smart, and a massive fan of babies and dogs.

I will always remember her smile, her laughter, her hugs, and her love for me. While life on this planet is temporary, love is permanent. by @timathea

I am in Malta leading an awesome group of women on a @damesly tour. Today we had the rare opportunity to visit the Monastery of St. Orsola's, home to the cloistered nuns of the Order of Malta (since the late 1700s.) After a tour, they surprised me with a chocolate birthday cake, song, lots of laughter, traditional spiced Malti coffee, and the promise that I always have sisters in Valletta. Thank you to Glorianne, Raff, and all my new Damesly friends for celebrating with me. šŸ‡²šŸ‡¹šŸŽ‚šŸ’— by @timathea

Wasn’t expecting THAT šŸ™Œ 90-minute Journaling Workshop with @timathea āœļø

One of the wisest women I’ve ever met leads these journaling sessions that feel…like hypnotherapy. Almost like interactive therapy but FUN (those are breakthrough tears, I promise).

If you need to shake some shit out of your psyche and gain clarity, I highly recommend joining even just one of her sessions.

Plus, I feel like these sessions should be more expensive…but they are only $45 😳

Thank you Timathea for being such a role model and source of strength for me. What you’re doing is so needed, so important and so god damn freeing.

Go to Timathea.com to sign up for her next workshop or reach out to her on IG @timathea

The loss 11 years ago was tragic, but the cruel way we (a disappointed mom and her young son leaving the Super Bowl stadium) were treated (horrible comments and slurs) by the fans of the winning team was frightening and took much of our love for this sport away. I wish no ill will toward the Patriots or their fans. It's hard to loose this game. I'm just really happy to win this particular match up. šŸŽ‰

I took 13 women to Baja Sur, Mexico and it went like…

Highlights of the trip:
ā˜€ļø Pure girl time
ā˜€ļøSwimming with whale sharks (still on my GoPro SD of course)
ā˜€ļøSnorkeling with sea turtles and sea lions
ā˜€ļøGlamping on a white sand beach in the middle of nowhere.
ā˜€ļøAnd did I mention pure girl time?

The women I meet on these trips become part of my family, my girl community. And out here, totally unplugged, after one week you feel like you’ve known each other for a lifetime.

Come us next time?

It’s been almost two weeks since my very dear friend, Sara Terry, passed away the night I flew home from Egypt. I have been missing her every day since then and still can’t wrap my head around the fact that she is no longer a phone call or text away. I don’t know what to do about the upcoming calendar entry for our catch up in person - we were actually both in town at the same time.

My life has been a whole lot better because Sara was in it. For almost 30 years our conversations about writing, travel to places that are not on most people’s lists, making a difference in the world where we could, how to think outside of the box, the crazy places we’d find our cats, integrity, our parallel lives with musician husbands and journalistic careers, our love of unusual interior paint colors and antique rings, spirituality, how to rock more than two pair of glasses simultaneously, and the power of photography, filled me with inspiration. Sara encouraged me along my creative and life path. Our conversations where thought-provoking, fun, and always wonderful. Sara gave me hope. It felt wonderful to be seen and celebrated by someone I admired so much. And she had the best laugh!

Sara hosted a baby shower for me even though we’d initially bonded over the fact we were happy without children. She stayed at our home while she was grieving the loss of her marriage. She called as soon as she heard she’d been awarded the Guggenheim. During the pandemic when we realized the insane number of months it had been since she had touched another human being, I raced over to her house to give her a fifteen minute hug and promised to be there for each other whenever we needed it. I'd wish we could do that again.

One of Sara’s babies was the Aftermath Project. It supports photographers who tell the stories of what it takes for individuals to learn to live again after war and conflict,Ā to rebuild their lives and homes, to restore civil societies, to address the lingering wounds of war while struggling to create new avenues for peace. I encourage you to be inspired by their work and support this important organization.
