Going to open houses this weekend? Look a little closer.

Beyond the beautiful kitchen and fresh paint, here are five things worth checking:

1. THE NATURAL LIGHT
Notice which rooms get sunlight during your visit. If you’re seriously interested, ask to return at a different time of day.

2. THE EVERYDAY STORAGE
Look beyond the bedroom closets. Where would you keep the vacuum, suitcases, sports equipment, and all the things you’d rather have out of sight?

3. THE SOUND
Spend a quiet minute inside and outside. Listen for traffic, neighboring activity, and anything you might miss during a busy open house.

4. THE PARKING
Check how you’d get in and out, whether your vehicle would fit in the garage, and where guests would park.

5. THE NEIGHBORHOOD
Walk a few blocks after your tour. You’re choosing the streets around your home, too.

The best time to find out your gutters are clogged? Before it rains. 🌧️

With El Niño preparations underway across LA County, now is a good time to give your home a little attention. For homeowners in Pasadena and the San Gabriel Valley, here’s where to start:

🍂 CLEAR THE PATH FOR WATER
Clean gutters, downspouts and yard drains. Check drainage channels for debris, and report blocked street storm drains to your city.

🏠 CHECK YOUR ROOF
Have a professional inspect for damaged tiles or shingles and potential leaks. Address small problems before the next storm puts them to the test.

🌳 GIVE YOUR YARD A ONCE-OVER
Have dead or damaged tree limbs assessed, secure patio furniture and umbrellas, and clear loose debris. Avoid excessive pruning, which can leave trees more vulnerable.

⛰️ PAY ATTENTION TO SLOPES
Check for new cracks, erosion or movement around hillsides and retaining walls. Keep drainage openings clear and get professional advice if something looks concerning—especially near foothills, canyons or recent burn areas.

🧱 PLAN AHEAD FOR SANDBAGS
If your property is prone to runoff, find your local pickup location before rain arrives and learn proper placement. Sandbags can help redirect water, but they don’t replace an evacuation plan.

📋 REVIEW YOUR INSURANCE

YOUR HOUSE KNOWS IT’S FALL BEFORE YOU DO.

The light hits a different wall in the morning.

The backyard falls into shade a little earlier.

The doors that stayed open all summer start closing at night.

Dinner slowly moves from outside back to the kitchen table.

And that one chair by the window suddenly becomes the best seat in the house again.
