At Assyl, dinner does not stay in one room. 🐎

The music reaches you before the room does: an Andalusian duo on oud and percussion, under crystal chandeliers. Chef Hafida and her all-female brigade cook pure Moroccan dishes, from the chicken and almond pastilla to the tanjia marrakchia, and belly dancers move between the tables. Before dessert, a waiter asks you to come outside, to a sand arena under a single light, and out of the dark come the Selman’s Arabian horses. Then back inside for dessert and tea.

Monday to Saturday, from 7:30 to 11 pm, at @selmanmarrakech

Moments of Marrakech: the Palmeraie.

North of the medina, a palm grove that exists because water was brought in underground, through channels dug by hand in the 11th and 12th centuries. Today it is gardens, villas and hotels.

Staying in the Palmeraie is a different register altogether. Mornings are slow and quiet, with nothing around you but greenery, birdsong and, of course, palms. The hotels are larger, set in their own grounds, and so complete that you may never need to leave.

We selected a few of its moments. Tell us which one is yours.

In the Medina, the door is the only thing a house lets you read. 🚪

Behind a plain wall there can be a courtyard with a fountain and orange trees, and nothing on the lane gives it away. That was the idea: wealth stayed inside, and from the lane every house looked the same. The door kept the few signs that mattered: a small leaf for every day and a large one for the mule, two knockers with two sounds, a brass hand against the evil eye.
Eight things to look for on your next walk, slide by slide.

Save it for your first morning in the Medina, and send it to the person you would get lost with.

For vegetarians or vegans, or those who want an alternative after a few days of tagine and couscous. 🌿

Mandala Society has two addresses in the Medina, one near the Bahia Palace and one by the Koutoubia Mosque. Both kitchens are meat-free, almost every dish is tagged vegan, vegetarian or pescatarian, and many others can be made fully plant-based on request.

Bahia is for a late coffee on the roof that slips into lunch, with the Atlas on the horizon and a long list of salads and green plates. Koutoubia, steps from Jemaa el-Fna, has even more vegan plates. Which one depends on where you are, and on what you feel like eating. The full story is on our guide, link in bio 🌿

A riad gives nothing away from the street: blank wall, no windows, a door that could belong to a storeroom. Three steps inside, there is sky above your head, the sound of water and a garden.

Riad means gardens in Arabic, and the oldest documented house of this kind in Morocco was built here in Marrakech, in 1126. Nearly all the riads that take guests today were family homes until thirty or forty years ago, restored one at a time, so no two are alike.

Before you book one, look at how many rooms it has, what you can eat without going out, whether there is a hammam and how far the taxi stops from the door. If there is a walk, ask the riad to come and meet you.

First time in Marrakech? Here is where to eat, occasion by occasion.

Lunch in Gueliz: on the terraces of the new town, for an arrival day or a slow morning that runs long.

Lunch on a rooftop in the Medina: six terraces between the edge of Jemaa el-Fna and the Spice Square.

Sunday brunch: from a hotel garden inside the walls to a farmhouse among the olive trees.

Iconic Moroccan dinner: the Moroccan feast in its most formal version.

Dinner with a show: for an evening that goes on well past the meal.

The cool dinner spots: the newer addresses, where the room counts as much as the plate.

25 tables in all. The full list and map is on Timence Guide, link in bio or comment “first time” and we will send it to you.

October in Marrakech: Five exhibitions opening between the 15th and the 24th, and fourteen more dates around them.

The art first. Odette du Puigaudeau and her Sahara arrived at the YSL Museum, the Rencontres de la Photographie take over the city from the 7th to the 10th, and Daoud Aoulad-Syad shows his colour work at MACAAL all month.

Then the openings come close together: Élisabeth Busson in the lobby of La Mamounia, Mounir Ayache at MCC Gallery on the 16th, Yasmine Amal at Siniya 28 on the 22nd, Hassan Bourkia at Comptoir des Mines on the 23rd, and Mouna Ahizoune and Hamza Marmouche at IZZA on the 24th.

At the table, Emmanuel Renaut and Olivier Nasti cook three evenings in the gardens of La Mamounia, from the 6th to the 8th, with desserts by Pierre Hermé. Saturday the 10th is a day to make things: ceramics on the rooftop of Riad Rosemary, sourdough at Um Mami, a soft party with SBAH x EVØLV. On Sunday the 25th, a Peruvian brunch in the gardens of Jnane Tamsna.

After dark, Carte Blanche at Le Salon Bô Zin every Thursday, Midnights Darna every Friday and Saturday, a Hidden Party at Ling Ling on the 9th, Sol Sundays with Shems on the El Fenn rooftop on the 11th and the 25th, and Jungle Groove at Palm Orchids on the 25th.

To close the month, Harvest Festival returns for its eleventh edition, from the 28th to the 1st of November, around Ri’āya, the Arabic word for care: an exhibition at Noujoum on Jemaa el-Fna, readings and talks at Le 18, and on the 31st a souk of High Atlas cooperatives at Dar Bellarj.

Dates and venues are on each slide. Save it for the month.

A simple medina door in Marrakech. Step inside, and a whole Mexican world opens up. 🔥

Laetitia and her daughter Inès spent more than a year shaping this riad with Moroccan craftsmen, with the Yucatán as their reference. Even the name brings it back to Marrakech: Azul is an Amazigh greeting.

Say hello to Pablo on the way in, climb to the roof before sunset, and let the tacos and the metre of shots go round the table. Dinner only, every evening from 6pm. The whole evening is in our story, link in bio.
