Three artists form an archive of Times Square’s vibrant sex clubs, which were active from the late 1960s through the mid-1980s. There existed a dense, largely self-regulating ecosystem of s**clubs that operated in the space the city had abandoned. None of the works moralize or mythologize; rather, they are records made by artists who understood the value of what they were looking at before it was gone or who have returned to its traces.

This exhibition opens at a moment when the political gains of the last several decades are being actively reversed, when bodies, desires, and the spaces that accommodate them are once again subject to legislation and erasure. In that context, an archive of Times Square’s sex culture is not a historical exercise but a reminder that these freedoms were always contingent, always contested, and always worth defending

What grew in the clubs was a form of social life: anonymous, cross-class, and largely ungoverned. Crucially, it was where queer life organized itself outside the surveillance of mainstream culture and where art, activism, and sexuality overlapped. The darkened theaters and club backrooms offered freedom from judgment and taboo and, in doing so, created the conditions for a potent subculture. Congratulations @habitual_body_monitoring2 who prepared the Danish Pavilion from her studio in residency here at Times Square Space

For the Denmark pavilion at this year’s Venice Biennale, curated by Chus Martínez, the artist homed in on a study conducted by the world’s largest sperm bank, which highlighted how porn images can dramatically improve the motility of sperm when delivered via VR equipment. The resulting film, Things to Come, in collaboration with DIS takes over the pavilion with floor-to-ceiling screens. “This is taking things to the next level,” Lyse told Artforum. “We have to take the image extremely seriously, because it doesn’t only influence us socially or culturally; it also impacts the body.” Born in 1993, Lyse is the youngest artist to represent Denmark in Venice. taken in Danish Pavilion by @timessquarespace

In her new watercolor series entitled Turbine, Simnett draws
on Slavic folklore to explore ancient displays of power, de-
fiance, and dominance. Having grown up in Great Britain
as the daughter of a Croatian mother during the Yugoslav
Wars, Simnett developed a recurring fantasy from afar: a
folkloric female figure who raises her skirt to expose herself
and repel evil, a gesture that is at once an act of self-expo-
sure and self-defence, vulnerability weaponized into power.
Simnett connects the ambiguity of this gesture–part tricke-
ry, part distraction–with cultural anxieties surrounding wo-

We are incredibly excited to announce the opening of Tom Bull’s HARDCORE COTTAGECORE next week at Times Square Space.

The exhibition is the culmination of our collaborative month-long residency at Maison Monna - a newly opened creative guesthouse and cultural space in Old Chatham, NY earlier this year. This new body of work spanning painting, sculpture and video further examines the tension between urban and rural sensibilities with particular ties to Shaker design and principles.

Opening on May 14th by appointment, the show will run through May 24th starting alongside New York’s Frieze Art Fair.

Opening tonight in LA @thejournalgallery ! @wolf_noam #BenWolfNoam’s work portraits highlighting different work environments for a range of people, exposing the breadth of types of work and a usually hidden part of many people’s lives. The series was started in his residency in Times Square Space in 2019 and has culminated in this exhibition and also a book.
