Virginia, my sweet Virginia. We camped, unplugged, reconnected, recharged. We sauntered, meandered, hiked, and rock scrambled. We saw a billion stars, a shooting star, and the Milky Way. We played “stick or snake?” We were treated to beautiful mountain vistas and a spectacular sunset. In the words of John Muir, “the mountains are calling and I must go.” So, go we did. Four concerts in the last eight days, and three of those this past weekend. After 33 DMB shows I finally chased down Dreaming Tree and my family was there to share in that moment. Amanda was glowing all night during Barenaked Ladies and Train. Phish absolutely blew the roof off Merriweather Post both nights. The energy and vibe was incredible. Amazing venues, music, and people. Live music is the best.

A great day of music beginning with an exciting collaboration between our HCYO students and the amazing musicians of the NOI+Festival, then it was off to Virginia for, what else, but a Dave Matthews Band concert. We’re officially less than two weeks out from this concert! I know I can speak for the other soloists when I say that we are looking forward to sharing the stage with the wonderful Columbia Orchestra for Viet Cuong’s percussion quartet concerto, Re(new)al! And what an exciting program overall!

A little bit about these guys…

I’ve known music director Richard Scerbo since our time at UMD more than twenty years ago, and we’ve been able to perform together over the years, mostly with his other amazing chamber orchestra, Inscape. He’s a friend and a talented conductor who brings out the best in everyone he works with!

I met Tristan Bouyer briefly a couple summers ago when he was a fellow at the NOI Summer Festival at UMD. I look forward to seeing him again and working with him!

Eric Plewinski has become one of my best friends and my favorite person to play with over the years. We play together most often with the Apollo Orchestra and Inscape, as well as other gigs throughout the area. There was a December a few years back where we saw each other nearly every day for various holiday gigs. He’s “Mr. Eric” to my kids, except when we’re sailing together on his boat, Puffin. Then he’s “Captain Eric.” We always have fun playing together…sometimes too much fun!

I’ve known Kyle Brightwell since he was 15, when he and my brother, Matt, were rising through the ranks of VA district band, all-state, and youth orchestra. Even when they were in high school I knew they were both destined to win an orchestra job someday. Matt went to NEC, and Kyle to Juilliard. They both ended up at BU together for grad school. And in 2012, when the Boston Symphony held an audition for section percussion, there were not only one, but two openings. And sure enough, Kyle won one, and my brother, the other. Kyle held that position with the BSO for ten years before retiring. To say that I’m excited to perform with Kyle is a massive understatement. He’s a world class musician and an even better dude, and because he’s my brother’s best friend, he’s practically family!
