Forty years ago today, on a cool October morning in Atlanta, my partner Barry took his last breath as I held his hand. It was 1985, the height of the AIDS crisis, and I was just twenty-three. I didn’t yet know that this moment — and the man I loved — would shape the rest of my life.

These three carousel posts tell our story: love found in chaos, dignity reclaimed in the face of fear, and grief that somehow grew into gratitude. They’re about Barry, but also about a generation of queer people who built families out of friendship and resilience when the world turned away.

I share this now not in sorrow but in thanks — for Barry’s life, for the community that saved me, and for every person who still carries the memory of someone they lost to AIDS.

A fabulous queer family Christmas celebration.
We are so lucky to have been adopted by these young queers. Different cultures, different countries, different ages, different genders, different ages….brought together by choice…thriving in love.
