#BeldenHouse, one of the three #HudsonValley historic sites I am campaigning to save, a Masterpiece by #AlexanderJacksonDavis in the #CarpenterGothic style, arguably the most significant architectural site in all of #PutnamCounty. Owned since 1896 by the City of New York, used as offices for over 100 years then left to waste since 2006, when 8 Million Dollars set aside for its preservation mysteriously went missing, and the house was de-listed from the National and State Registers.

First built around 1750 by Thomas Belden, land agent of the Philipse Family who owned the entirety of Present-Day Putnam County, the house was later transformed by His Great Grandson to the design of #AJDavis, enlisting freedmen who had come North during the Civil War.

It is disputed whether the house was part of the #UndergroundRailroad, with some accounts claiming there to be a Freed Slave Cemetery on the site, while others hold this to be a Native Burial Ground which predates the house altogether.

Hundreds of Acres of the original farmlands as well as the house were taken by eminent domain by the City of New York in 1896, turned into West Branch Reservoir. Interestingly, the house was about the only thing spared, probably due to it’s prominence and utility as a major structure, while the entirely of the ‘old town’ of Carmel on the croton river was burnt to the ground.

These incredible images of the world trade center were taken by photographer Balthazar Korabal long before my lifetime, yet somehow capture the place exactly as I remember it from my childhood.

My family and I spent time in august of 2001 at the twin towers while my sister was a contender for miss teen New York. I had to miss school for the occasion so my teacher asked me to keep a journal. In lieu of words, which I barely knew how to spell, I spent the week sketching that which I saw, including the globe statue in the courtyard and the incredibly tall arches of the lobby.

I remember waiting to be seated at the windows of the world resturant while my sister helped me to write out captions on each page. I wasn’t yet 5 years old, yet the memory seems so vivid. I don’t know if I would be able to recall any of this if it weren’t for the horror that occurred so soon thereafter.

I was too young to understand what was happening when my mom picked me up from school on the morning of September 11th, so soon after I had arrived on the bus, but when we got home and turned on the tv I sat on the floor and saw the footage from ground zero for the first time. Somewhere in the coverage there was a fragment of the globe statue among the wreckage, and it started to settle in. Thus 9/11 became my first core memory.

As the years went on, I observed how certain friends or teachers would be absent on the anniversary, later finding out just how many people knew someone who died. It was a tragedy that affected us all, and as a result the world changed dramatically.

These images not only capture the towers, but a world altogether alien to the one in which we live now, and a city at the center of that world which only exists now in memory.

Sending love to families and friends of all 9/11 victims, and to those throughout the world who continue to suffer from acts of violence and terrorism. taken in World Trade Center by @timmyfarina

This drawing from 1778 depicts my ancestor Daniel Nimham, the last Leader of the Wappinger Nation, who died defending his ancestral homeland during the War for Independence.

Daniel and his son Abraham had served alongside Washington at Valley Forge, and were the only two Native Americans elevated to the rank of Captain in the Continental Army. They received Christian names upon their baptism by famed missionary Jonathan Edwards “evangelist to the children of the forest” in Stockbridge, Massachusetts.

Daniel fought throughout his life to defend his Sovereign Claim to the Wappinger Homelands, which comprise the eastern shore of the Hudson River from the northern tip of Manhattan to present day Duchess County, including the “crown jewel of the highlands” Lake MaHopac where my family still resides. Daniel’s land claims were so well known and controversial in the colonial courts that He and three other Indian Chiefs were received at the court of King George III in England, where he remained for two years pleading the case.

The claim was not officially resolved until 1811 when the State of New York Settled with John Jacob Astor, who was the wealthiest Man in America, for $150,000, effectively ending any recourse for the Wappinger decedents.

Daniel and Abraham died along with 40 other men of the Wappinger and Mahican tribes at the battle of Kingsbridge in the Bronx, where ‘Indian Field’ exists today (Van Cortland Park). Many of the Stockbridge Indians removed to Wisconsin, where a federally-recognized decedent group live today, while others like my 6x Great-Grandmother Hannah (Daniel’s Daughter) returned to the Hudson Valley, living out their days in the only home they ever knew.

I am grateful to the knowledge bearers in my extended family who have helped me to reconnect with this history and to experience it on a personal level, as well as to have been able to research it under the guidance of Ned Blackhawk, one of America’s leading Indigenous Scholars, while a student at Yale.

The interior of Nocturne House circa 1892 featuring it’s original Heart Pine and Curly Pine Woodwork, which remarkably has never been painted over. Decorated in a salon style by the current owners, it’s as if you stepped into a life size Victorian curio cabinet. #victorianarchitecture #historicpreservation #gerogiatrust #woodwork #antiques taken in Quitman, Georgia by @timmyfarina

The beautiful grounds of Nocturne House in Southern Georgia, a post civil war farm featuring specimen live oaks, cabbage palms, magnolia grandiflora, and indigenous loblolly (yellow) pines. The house and gardens, both on the National Register of Historic Places, have been lovingly restored over the last 20 years by the current owners, with more and more of the original acreage brought back. #georgiatrust #historicpreservation #nationaltrust #victorianarchitecture #southernhome taken in Quitman, Georgia by @timmyfarina

layers on layers - the details in this years show house are so full of whimsy and storytelling, transporting you into the intensely personal yet imaginary world of each designer. Theatrical, nuanced, collected, existing only for a brief shining moment and gone as quickly as it came, ephemeral, sublime. Bravo to all, feeling so very inspired. @kbshowhouse #interiordesign #kipsbayshowhouse taken in Greenwich Village by @timmyfarina

The 51st annual Kips Bay Designer Show House - a triumph of layering, nuance, and warmth, positively bursting with subversive undertones and nods to queer culture. I really loved how this year’s class brought individual passions and personality to each of the spaces, it seemed sexier and more modern to me than in years past - not a breaking with tradition per se but definitely turning up the heat and adding a bit of bad boy energy. Very much enamored with the results
 congratulations to all involved. @kbshowhouse #interiordesign #interiors #interiorstyling #kipsbayshowhouse #greenwhichvillage taken in Greenwich Village by @timmyfarina
