I had the opportunity to document an incredible climbing adventure in Yosemite with @timmyoneill and @jackwurster as they took on The Nose on El Capitan, aiming to complete the route in under 24 hours. Alongside my friend Nicola Martinez, I followed their journey from the preparation at the base of El Capitan to the final pitches of the climb. While they climbed through the night, Nicola and I made our way to the summit, spent the night on top, and rappelled down six pitches before the sunrise to meet them near the finish and photograph those final moments. They completed the climb in approximately 23 and a half hours, an incredible achievement later featured by @patagonia_climb . Huge respect to Jack for continuing to push the limits like that, and for a lifetime of dedication to climbing. His experience, commitment, and passion for the sport are truly inspiring. And a big shoutout to Timmy O’neill as well. Having two climbers with a combined age of 115 taking on such an iconic route is a powerful reminder that passion and determination really don’t have an age limit.
Special thanks for @nicolamartinezz for inviting me to be part this adventure ⚡️. taken in Yosemite National Park, California by @timmyoneill

Climbing is transcendent. It elevates one not only above the ground but even more above the everyday.

Two days ago I spent nineteen hours enchaining three granite monoliths in the high Sierra with @loversleappetch

Summits are temporary, yet the memories - a startling half moon rise through cliffside midnight trees, and the lessons - everything is training for parenthood, are durable.

In the short term we were engrossed in navigating epic landscapes within the x and y axes.

We traversed the Dana plateau as a pulsating blood orange sunrise illuminated the 3rd Pillar, an eight hundred foot sublime flying buttress. We hiked up, down and then climbed up again, via twelve hundred feet of coarse granite crack cradled on the south west face of Mount Conness. And finally, a third round of coffee preceded an irregular start time for the Regular Route of Fairview Dome, thirteen hundred feet of fingers, hands, toes and knobs.

And for the long term we entrusted these experiences to a living 401K—one that invests in curiosity, joy and play, paying out present sums of regenerative youthful exuberance: liveidends.

Thanks to @sarahleesteele for guarding the kids while I lived unguarded. And thanks to @loversleapguides for the inspiration and activation of another DirtySouth StrawBilly (aka DirtyBilly) Triple.

Dean Potter called Timmy O’Neill his “secret weapon.” At 57, Timmy is still doing mountain days that would flatten most climbers.

If you watched HBO’s The Dark Wizard, you’ll recognize Timmy as one of the climbers featured in the series—and one of Dean’s closest climbing partners in Yosemite.

The series brought me back to this conversation I recorded with Timmy a couple of years ago. It felt even more relevant now, so I’m returning it to the podcast.

Timmy talks candidly about aging: recovery is slower, but the desire to get outside remains as strong as ever. We explore what Dean saw in him, why he keeps returning to the same walls after 35 years, and how to build a “life wish.”

Listen through the link above, or search Ageless Athlete — Timmy O’Neill on Apple, Spotify, or YouTube.

Climbing all over South Lake Tahoe: a bunch of different crags, some trad leading, plenty of lake jumps, and took part in the inaugural South Lake Tahoe Picnic. Met a lot of really cool people too!

Last week I joined four pals and climbed Cathedral Peak in Tuolumne Meadows. So great to be back on the stone with close friends @jib.ellison , @loralohara and @timmyoneill and Earl Alderson, with Timmy and Earl rope-gunning for the old dog. It was Loral’s first multi-pitch climb. I met Loral when she reached out after reading my book Life Lived Wild and wanted to connect. Not that easy as she’s an astronaut and was reading the book from the International Space Station. NASA made it happen, and we had a great hour-long Zoom while she literally floated around showing me the ISS. Photos by Timmy, Loral and Earl. by @timmyoneill

Yesterday we covered lots of ground, but it felt like even more rock. Miles of backcountry terrain gave way to the Incredible Hulk’s varied vertical fractures. The best days usually include the best people, so @loversleappetch and I decided on a double shot Tuesday—our first time doing two climbs on the Hulk in a day. We left the ground’s pleasing temps at 9am with just the right amount of nettlesome wind to remind us who’s boss.

Sunspot was first, involving four long pitches with techy stemming, and a steep boulder-problem crux. Next up were four pitches on Positive Vibes, a most beautiful series of granite fissures, followed by a quick summit call w/ @sarahleesteele to get the parental green light to make it a triple.

We had the sun on our backs, the wind in our faces, and the seemingly endless finger, hand, toe and foot jams above, in our minds, as we set up the Red Dihedral in three pitches. The summer solstice gifts long days, but we walked the last thirty minutes to the carpark in the forest filtered light of a halfmoon.

It’s a decided discomfort to practice the art of climbing, and perhaps placing oneself in personal peril is an even greater act of foolishness. But I know in my heart that the calming, sublime, yet temporary, wholeness that I detect in these outings just might be the best answer to the perennial question, “Why am I here?” by @timmyoneill

The contrast between naming a thing, say ‘ocean,’ and understanding the thing—‘an expanse of saltwater covering 70% of the earth’s surface, holding 97% of its water, and teeming with a vast array of marine life...’ is the difference between noticing and knowing.

Skandy (Sketchy Andy) @sketchyandylewis was an obvious nickname, but defining that ineffable, inimitable, wild soul is best left to the experiences and feelings he willingly created and purposefully curated in others.

He was a dynamo that converted the energy of his physical feats into a galvanizing force that inspired awe and action; a human power strip, intent on others plugging in to feel the buzz.

As eclectic as he was electric, he was an intentional mosaic of fabrics, feelings, textures, and tattoos all proudly displayed like a living museum of ecstatic experience, keeping 24/7 hours with no admission fee.

Andy was a deep thinker who wasn’t content with inert navel-gazing; instead, he actively pursued his existence with unimaginable, conventionally irresponsible, and gob-smackingly audacious acts of free will. “F Yea Andy!”

I feel certain that Andy would have much preferred to die alone. And though we almost never get to choose the manner and timing of our death, we almost always get to choose the manner and timing of our life. Andy chose one of the most unique, startling and outrageous existences I’ve ever had the pleasure of encountering.

I will miss him in person and continue to enjoy him in spirit.

A full, fun day in the alpine w/ a season opener on the Incredible Hulk.

This past Sunday @ dawn I cramponed to the base with skis strapped to my back, then shoed up for a sunny, glorious romp up the Red Dihedral, to a final rappel of Infinity Gauntlet, 🙏 @jer.collins & team.

As the light faded and the cold snapped, we clicked on headlamps and into bindings, then furiously shaved ice back to the valley floor.

A winning winter visit to lay new eyes on an old friend.
