In 2003, the legendary Whitney Houston wore @KevanHallDesign’s signature Whitney Gown — a bias-cut design with an asymmetrical cowl neckline — on the national television drama Boston Public, performing “Try It On My Own” for millions of viewers.

Whitney Houston sold over 220 million records and broke barriers across music, film, and fashion. Off stage, her elegance was just as deliberate as her voice.

Chosen by award-winning celebrity stylist Timothy Snell @timothysnellone — the man behind some of the most iconic looks in #Hollywood on Whitney Houston, Queen Latifah, Angela Bassett, and Tisha Campbell-Martin.

For his Spring 2005 collection, shown at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios in Los Angeles, Hall drew inspiration from Millicent Rogers — the Standard Oil heiress celebrated for her effortless, unconventional glamour.

In this collection, Hall reimagined the Whitney Gown in a bold black and white polka dot, reinterpreting the signature silhouette through a more playful and graphic lens while preserving its essential architecture.

In attendance at Hall’s Spring 2005 runway show were celebrities including Laurence Fishburne, who commented “I think my wife needs to own every piece that was in the collection this evening.”

In 2006, animator Sarah E. Meyer wore Kevan Hall’s Whitney Gown when she accepted the Emmy Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation for the “Easter Basket” episode of Robot Chicken at the 58th Annual Creative Arts Emmy Awards — bringing the designer’s signature sensibility to one of television’s most distinctive award nights.

In November 2024, Japan Airlines invited Hall on an inspirational journey to Tokyo, Kagawa, and Tokushima, where he immersed himself in centuries-old Japanese craft traditions including suminagashi marbling, kintsugi, and indigo dyeing.

Returning home, he reimagined the Whitney Gown in a suminagashi-inspired print in alabaster and taupe — honoring both the heritage of the original design and the artisans who inspired its evolution.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of standing in the presence of greatness—from princes and princesses to global icons and dignitaries. Yet among them all stood Clive Davis, a true visionary whose extraordinary ear and unwavering belief in talent shaped generations of music. To witness his greatness firsthand was an honor. On September 14, 2009, Whitney Houston made her final appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show. It was the season premiere and a significant moment in her career.

I know because I was there.

For 15 years, I had the privilege of serving as Whitney Houston's fashion stylist. We shared remarkable experiences, and that day in Chicago was one of them. I was with Whitney for the taping, celebrating what was an important chapter in her life and career.

What I witnessed was a woman who was clear, focused, present, and fully prepared to give her all. She approached that appearance with professionalism, grace, and purpose.

That's my firsthand experience. Refuting anything else is a misnomer. It simply does not reflect what I personally witnessed that day.

Whitney Houston's voice changed music. But beyond the gift, she possessed a resilience, dignity, and commitment to excellence that deserve to be remembered with the same honesty
