I think this pretty well covers the books that affected me the most in 2025. Out of 112 total reads, these are the tops.

I am so thankful to every single author I read this year, these represented here and all of the others too. Not only that: I am overwhelmed with gratitude and love for SO MANY of you out there; for sharing the books that meant something to you and allowing me to find so much more to love and be educated by.

Never think your posts about books are silly or unnecessary or that nobody cares. I know this sounds dramatic, but you are changing other people’s lives. Truly. I mean that. Obviously, we need the writers to keep writing… but don’t stop talking about what you read.

Our “child” is no longer that, in essence. They are an adult. (I hate to be too heavy-handed with a cliche, but when they work, they work.) Time has absolutely flown and been a thief and I cannot believe it has been 18 years since the BIRTH day.

They have not created words to embody what a first child means to parents. All of the emotions, fear, joy, second (and 3rd and 4th and so on) guessing, advice heeded and advice discarded. It’s a lot. And in the midst of all of that, there is your baby. Your tiny, fragile, perfect human. And your heart could not possibly be any fuller.

And that feeling is still here, along with many others. But at the base of it all, at the center of it all and surrounding it all is LOVE. The love that I feel for my “child” is impenetrable and eternal.

I am so proud of the adult you have already started to become, even before this 18th birthday. Your loyalty and care for your friends is unmatched. Your concerns for the planet and other communities and people around the globe makes me incredibly proud (and also hopeful for those in your generation). Your personal style is refreshing, it makes me smile and I love that you express yourself uniquely.

I love you forever and ever and ever… I will always want the absolute best for you in every facet of your life. I’m proud of how far you’ve come and I am sincerely and truly blessed to be able to get such an intimate and close-up view of what a good human looks like as they grow up. Keep on your path. ❤️❤️ by @timreadthat

My review of “Dominion” by Addie Citchens.

This not long book sure is a banger deluxe. Slump buster deluxe, if and when you need that. The story surrounding this family in the church In Mississippi… the patriarchy that exists… how that power can be used (and abused). As someone raised in the church, son of a pastor, this not only hit me in a way, but it was like being hit by an octopus: multiple ways at the same time.

I can’t recommend this book enough. Another Black author… another Black Woman author… have you not learned from this yet? Diversify your reading, people!

My “review” of “Salvage The Bones” by *the* Jesmyn Ward.

I have had this book (amongst 4 others) by Jesmyn Ward on my shelves for quite some time and just never got to any of them. During that time, she has released 2 additional books (that I do have, as well) and I just keeeeeeppppttttt right on stockpiling. Silly. Rookie move.

Better late than never, I decided to start with Salvage The Bones, which wasn’t the best move ever. Don’t get me wrong: I loved this book and it gave me that reassurance that I made the right choice by filling my shelves with her catalog. She 👏 Can 👏 Write 👏 my goodness me, can she write!

The “poor choice” refers to my not knowing that this was the 2nd book of a trilogy of sorts around this community in a small gulf town in Mississippi. I don’t know how much it matters that I did that, but I’m definitely going to go back and start at the beginning of this.

Very late posting to this app of my review of “Minor Detail” by Adania Shibli.

This is under 150 pages but packs a mighty punch. We go through two time lines in this: the first being during the Nakba (look that up, if it doesn’t resonate with you) in 1949. And then, we jump forward decades to another woman digging into what took place in the past and dealing with her own experiences of displacement, and living under occupation.

This was fascinating to me and at the time I read this, it really nudged me into needing to understand more of the history of the Palestinian people. #bookstagram #bookrecs #bookreview #TimReadThat by @timreadthat

Allow me to introduce the Forever Desert Trilogy by Nigerian American author Moses Ose Ufomi, These books are all pretty short, but I understand they pack quite a punch.

I will never stop saying this and I will never apologize for that either: read diverse books and read diverse authors. Your brain will thank you. Your soul will thank you. The people in communities around you will thank you. I also say: thank you.

My review of Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke.

There are a lot of books that when I say “I liked this” or “I enjoyed this”, I do air quotes with my hands. Because “enjoy” isn’t really the right word for it. I don’t *LOOOOOOVE* when the character you spend all or most of your time “inside” their POV is a toxic, problematic or gross human being (in MY opinion). This was absoluviously one of those experiences.

Once it got to a certain point, this became *very* difficult for me to put down. I highly anticipated the conclusion as well as really just wanting the FMC to lose out in the end.

I think the hype is fairly real with this one. It’s polarizing, for sure and I will most likely watch the adaptation (mainly because it will be starring one of my faves: Anne Hathaway).

I totally get why many don’t love this book. Don’t get me wrong. Buddy read w/ @alwaysreadingtwobooks #bookrecs #bookreview #bookish

Also: just because I *need* to have all of the books of a trilogy before I start reading from Book 1, that doesn’t *AT ALL* mean that I will roll right into Book 2 after finishing the 1st book. My issues have subsets of issues. Aside from lots of books on my shelves, I also own self awareness.

This is truly about the “Broken Earth” series by NK Jemisin, though… not about me. #timreadthat #bookrecs #NKJemisin #blackauthors by @timreadthat

It’s getting oh so close to that time where so many of us create that stack of books that represent what we really want to read before the year is over. I’m not quite there just yet… BUT let’s put some books in the running to be included in that list, shall we? We shall.

Books mentioned:

“These Heathens” - Mia McKenzie
“The Kingmaker” - Kennedy Ryan
“Long Shot” - Kennedy Ryan
“John Of John” - Douglas Stuart
“The Great Wherever” - Shannon Sanders
“Migrations” - Charlotte McConaghy
“Harlem Rhapsody” - Victoria Christopher Murray
“Lonely Crowds” - Stephanie Wambugu
“This Here Is Love” - Princess Joy L. Perry
“The Great Mann” - Kyra Davis Lurie

It’s all in the image…

Really enjoying this book “Begin Again: James Baldwin’s America And Its Urgent Lessons For Our Own” by Eddie S. Glaude Jr.

I’m doing this as an “immersive read” after having gotten my copy of this when it published. Sorry, not at all in the slightest bit sorry, but I will get almost anything that comes out regarding James Baldwin. I have read quite a bit of his books, a lot of his essays, watched numerous interviews, things written about him… and I never stop learning and constantly pausing to just take in his brilliant thoughts.

I listened to and read this section by the author over 5 times before deciding I just needed to share it with others.
