6:41pm as the sun is setting on Finchley Road & Frognal. Fuck me, so much zombie development littering London around transport hubs, but this one by @webbyates, @ateliers_romeo and @groupwork_arch lifts the spirits as days shorten.

A load-bearing stone exoskeleton assembled out of hundreds of precision-cut pieces of Norwegian Larvikite granite and basalt forms the outside of the building. A bit front to back with trackside elevations stealing the show perhaps. by @timrettler

Crazy day trip opportunities if one can manage to crawl out of bed at 0600 on a Sunday morning… this time catapulted out of the Big Smoke into the rolling South Downs by TfL, Southwestern and Iliana the taxi chauffeur. In the excellent company of @ninatheswede, @judithloesing and @jamerpayne.

Models of economical space planning and construction to enable habitation - as community, in the landscape - at the Weald & Downland Living Museum, which resonated as surprisingly modern and radical. Almost fulfilling the fundamentals of Hannes Meyer’s Building manifesto: sex, sleep, animal husbandry, gardening, personal hygiene, weather protection, cleaning, cooking, heating, lighting, just falling short on the car maintenance brief. by @timrettler

Margate first came to prominence as a seaside resort in when wealthy visitors sought improved health by bathing in seawater. It is thought to have been the first English coastal town in to provide a substantial, purpose-built seawater bath, which opened in 1736.

As sea-bathing increased in popularity, Margate was transformed into a flourishing seaside resort. In 1937 these facilities were augmented with the construction of two larger tidal pools: Marine Terrace Tidal Pool and Walpole Bay Tidal Pool, both Grade II listed.

The Marine Terrace Tidal Pool was designed by Borough Engineer E A Borg and executed with modifications under his successor W L Armstrong. The top of the wall was arranged so the pool is completely submerged at every high tide in order to ensure sufficient change-over of water twice a day. by @timrettler

Admont Abbey, home to the largest monastic library in the world, the ‘eighth wonder of the world’ (Vogue). Loved the eclectic collection of step ladders to get closer to enlightenment. Only god knows how to find anything specific within the endless wallpaper of white, beige and brown dust jackets. Perhaps a trick by the friars to disguise the juridical casework on fornication amongst canonical scripture. The ‘pay what you like’ jumble sale shelf at the end of the hall added a nice touch. Oh and I did find god on the way out. Almost time to go home. by @timrettler

Das Gesäuse, or Gseis or Xeis, named after the roaring sound of the River Enns echoing across the rocky flanks of the valley. This hike had it all: wet socks, sore legs, melancholic scenery, great huts and a moon to pale any eclipse. by @timrettler

Elisabeth Beer was 28 years old when the Nazis deported her from Vienna and murdered her in Maly Trostinec in May 1942.

She was the daughter of Julius and Margarethe Beer with whom she and her brother lived for a short period in the eponymous villa in the 13th district, designed by Josef Frank and Oskar Wlach.

Connected to her teenage bedroom was a small gymnastics studio with green linoleum flooring which she eventually repurposed as a darkroom.

Elisabeth was left behind when her family fled to the United States because strict visa rules denied her entry due to a walking disability from polio. by @timrettler

Three houses by von Ballmoos Krucker, Sergison Bates and Werner Neuwirth forming part of the city council’s “Intercultural Living” brownfield redevelopment programme in the Nordbahnhof area of the 2nd district.

On top of a chunky ground floor of cavernous entrance loggias and commercial and public uses sits a collection of around 100 affordable homes with a range of typologies catering for singles and single parents to larger, extended families. by @timrettler

The Gänsehäufel lido on the Old Danube.

For a short while at the beginning of the last century, Florian Berndl used the river island to teach Viennese citizens in naturopathy and naturism. The conservative city leaders eventually got cold feet and revoked the lease, installing the largest municipal lido instead.

After the war, Max Fellerer and Eugen Wörle designed the new Gänsehäufel, now listed. Up to 30,000 people visit the 200 hectare site each day. Some still venture to the now separate nudist section; the children shriek for joy in the wave machine; and many, mostly older, residents enjoy the hot city summer in and around one of over 3,000 rental cabins dotted around the landscape.

Lacaton & Vassal considered the project for the cafeteria in the Architekturzentrum Wien an act of resistance against the official project of the Museumsquartier and its fifteen years of decision making, feasibility studies and building works.

The cafe was supposed to be different: full of lightness and life – reminiscent of the opportunistic and constantly changing appropriation of the former imperial stables by Viennese artists.

“Military-like, severe, hard, authoritarian. Even the sky is framed and disciplined in the courtyards… It seemed as if we only needed a big blue sky, a kind of immense change of scenery, a dream. We also had the notion of a Turkish cafe where one sits really comfortably and can sit and talk for a long time. We had this brick vault and the idea behind the project was simply to hang a ‚canopy‘ in the space.”

The cafe is no more, but the tiled canopy by Asiye Kolbai-Kafalier remains to be enjoyed during private and corporate functions. by @timrettler

Ending our excursion where we started our first Stockholm trip 13 years ago, at the Kulturhuset on Sergels torg.

Peter Celsing won the city council’s competition in 1965 for a building which was originally intended for the Moderna Museet to occupy large parts, but the museum dropped out before the project was completed.

It became the temporary seat of the Swedish Parliament until 1983, while the Riksdag building was remodelled for a unicameral legislature, which had been introduced in 1971.

Today it’s a democratic bric-a-brac of theatre, library, free children’s craft and old folk playing chess in the lobby. by @timrettler
