Episode 4 of The New Normal is live with Chancellor David Andrews of UMass Global.

He told us the deployment he knows will be his most controversial take in higher ed: fully student-facing AI without human intervention. In his words, "We're not waiting for the technology. We're waiting for the fear to reduce."

We get into:

- Why higher ed is organized around faculty instead of students, and what that costs in the AI era

- Serial monogamy with instructors: what one professor learns about a student almost never transfers to the next, and no amount of AI fixes it without micro-level data

Episode 3 of The New Normal is live 🎙️ President Scott Pulsipher of @westerngovernorsu joins us at WGU headquarters in Salt Lake City.

WGU is the largest nonprofit online university in America. 190,000+ students enrolled right now. All 50 states. Over 500,000 degrees awarded.

Most university presidents climb the academic ladder for decades. Scott came from Amazon.

WGU runs on just over 10,000 employees, nearly two-thirds of them interacting with students every day. Its net promoter score sits between 70 and 75, roughly double the higher ed average.

Episode 2 of The New Normal is live 🎙️President Madeline Pumariega of Miami Dade College joins us in MDC's AI Center on the Wolfson Campus.
Miami Dade College is the largest community college in America. 125,000+ students a year. 8 campuses. 2.5 million alumni.

President Pumariega does not run pilots. She runs transformations.
Since 2021, Miami Dade College has trained 10,000+ people in AI, put 1,000+ employees through AI training, and worked with 400+ companies. MDC is the first institution in Florida to offer a bachelor's degree in applied AI.
We get into the distinction between Digital Workers and AI Agents, how MDC reduced the admissions application from 45 minutes to 7 minutes, why students engaged longer with Digital Workers than humans in MDC's deployment, and what Miami has to become to keep rising as one of the fastest growing global cities in America.

Every leader deploying AI at scale faces this moment. Half the team is excited about the technology. Half is afraid it will replace them.

At Penn Foster, one of their learning designers started in the skeptic camp. When she was asked to help build an AI-generated course, her initial frame was that this was a project designed to build the agents that would replace her job.
Then something changed halfway through.

She realized she had dozens of tasks she was doing manually every day that she could build agents to do for her.
So she did.

She named one Check Norris. It scans course assignments and tests whether the reading level matches the target audience. What used to take her hours now takes five minutes. Check Norris freed her to spend her time on the actual analysis instead of the manual work.

The skeptic became the advocate.
But only because Penn Foster invested in bringing her along.
CEO Kermit Cook's advice for other leaders is direct: you have to invest in the time to bring people along the journey and not assume they are going to get there on their own.
Penn Foster invested in training every single manager. They brought their virtual workforce together in person for AI workshops.

The hardest part of deploying AI at scale is not the technology. It is investing in the people who will use it.
