Timber Trail: a highlight of NZ’s North Island 💚

We’d heard so many good things about the Timber Trail and were excited to finally ride it. We spent two days on the forested 85 km route, camping overnight at the free DOC campground at the top.

The first day was a social, easygoing ride with @joshgold___ and @sarathorshammer: lots of stopping for snacks, chats, and views. On the second day, our friends peeled off early, so Daniel and I took our time, meandering along the trail and stopping to admire the textures and colors along the way.

Riding a mountain bike trail requires a different kind of attention than road riding. On the road here, I’m usually focused on what’s behind me—watching for cars and trucks coming up to pass. On the Timber Trail, your attention stays forward. It was a simple but welcome shift.

One of my favorite rides of the entire trip so far.

A disposable camera pairs so beautifully with slow travel. I picked one up in Tokyo in October during the quick visit to see friends (thank you @alpinemily for the inspiration!), and just got the photos developed now that we’re back in Tokyo again. Love these memories so much. 🤍

The landscape of Shikoku has mirrored my mood this past week: plenty of highs, a few lows.

Today, we stopped to resupply at a small corner store. The grocer met us outside with hot tea, and later, gifted us a box of mugwort red bean pancakes for the road. A few days ago, someone gifted us a bag of mandarin oranges. Kindness really does transcend language; these little moments have meant a lot.

I’ve had some lows, too. We’re doing our best to avoid national highways full of 16-wheelers, but we’ve had a few stressful rides. After months on the move, I also desperately needed stillness - literally staying in ONE place (bed), napping, and reading on my kindle. Hitting pause for a few days in Uchiko did wonders.

We had a string of absurd adventures the last few days: riding through abandoned tunnels, navigating road closures, and hike-a-biking through steep bamboo groves… all of this to avoid heavily trafficked roads. Here are a few shots of our (mis)adventures and the payoff: some truly epic views. taken in Shikoku by @tinaon2wheels

One year since the Komoot Women’s Arizona Rally (now @laelsrallies) 🏜️🚴🏻‍♀️

I never did a proper recap, so here’s an extremely late photo dump. This ride’s impact still ripples through my life. Not only did it introduce me to some of my now-closest friends (🫶), but I’m still riding around, “looking at stuff,” one year later!

I’ll always remember wild camping under desert stars, coyotes howling through the night, secret aid stations just when you needed them most, and the descent of a lifetime off of Mount Lemmon.

Big love to everyone I rode, camped, and laughed with—you are all such badasses and inspirations—and ESPECIALLY to @laelwilcox @rugilekaladyte @gofastergaby @mindride.ibk @mpmassagetherapy & @ashleygruber for bringing this experience to life. This week will stay with me forever. 💛

Japan lately: new friends, sake circles, and cozy tent nights.

(still very behind on trip posts - haven’t even touched South Korea yet 🙃 - but trying to be a bit more timely in present-day Japan!)

After a few days figuring out our plans in Fukuyama, Daniel and I turned around and headed south to Shikoku via the Shimanami Kaido.

We waited out a rainy day at @guesthousetonari, where we swapped sake and stories with our backpacking-loving hosts, Taka and Kana, and met travelers Kim, Andrew, and Caroline.

Camping with Kim and Andrew for the next few nights was a blast. We slept on an island accessible only by bikes and mopeds, got gifted freshly grilled food from campsite neighbors, and saved a local’s massive gazebo from blowing away. We met so many kind, open-hearted people, including fellow bike travelers.

I’d been feeling a bit low after saying goodbye to my friends in Tokyo, but the last few days reminded me to stay open to what’s out there. So many unexpected and happy moments. 💛 taken in Imabari, Ehime by @tinaon2wheels

Taroko Gorge, July 2025.

We joined one of the first tours back since the 2024 Hualien earthquake.

Much of the national park is still closed, and whole sections will probably never reopen. Even while we were there, baseball-sized chunks of rock were still falling onto the road (😯).

It felt raw, fragile, and very much alive. taken in Taroko National Park 太魯閣國家公園 by @tinaon2wheels

Us: 0. Typhoon: 1.

We rode from Taitung up to the Luye Highlands to attend the opening weekend of the Taiwan Hot Air Balloon Festival, but Typhoon Danas got there first.

Instead of balloons, we got two days inside at one of the nicest homestays we’ve stayed at, lush pineapple fields, and even shrimp (or maybe crawfish?) scattered in the garden.

It was a good reminder that sometimes it’s okay when things don’t work out. 🌧️ taken in 臺灣國際熱氣球嘉年華-Taiwan International Balloon Festival by @tinaon2wheels

A 400-mile huandao (環島) around Taiwan on Cycle Route 1.

On the industrial west coast, we rode alongside scooters in the bike lane. But the East Rift Valley, from Taitung to Hualien, was lush and breathtaking.

I was worried Taiwan might feel foreign. Instead, it felt like a part of me I’d been circling back to all along. by @tinaon2wheels
