Life’s entrances, exits, and some moments in between.

The last few years brought celebration and quiet contemplation. I graduated from @usccinema, made a film or two with some terrific people, and celebrated friends and family in their new beginnings. I explored Ireland, Japan and started a new life with Selene in Los Angeles. 2024 also had its B-sides, though, and I’m glad to see it pass.

This time last year, my Uncle Steve showed up at my apartment with an ‘89 Mitsubishi Delica van he purchased from a guy under a bridge in San Francisco.
.

.
.
In Steve fashion, he decided to take a solo tour around the continent with no hard plans and no end date. With a backpack, a propane grill, and Dire Straits on the radio, he stopped to visit friends and family, made some new pals, and occasionally had hitch a ride on a train car when the van decided it was done driving. And after the silver bullet van became world-famous, Steve got engaged to his partner, Kerri, in Florence and would marry under the disguise of a backyard engagement party a few months later.

Life changes pretty quick, though. It all hits you when you’re unfolding a paper speech to memorialize someone close to you. And just a few weeks ago, it was my turn. My speech was for my Uncle Steve, who at the age of 56, had a lot more life left to live.

Uncle Steve was an enigma; a fun-loving, rule-bending adventurer who lived every day as if it were his last. He wore a smile everyday, cared little about appearances, and never stopped being himself. He lived for a good prank, a glass of wine, and a ride on his boat ‘Martini and Me,’ with his son, Alex.

Steve and I took a sunset run on the last day of 2023. I looked out on the same sunset this year, and thought of the movie “Big Fish.”

From the fine print alone, becoming a newly minted, highly-ranked Juris Doctoris from UC Berkeley is nothing to joke about. It’s a path that only the dedicated few have traveled through and achieved in.

Whether in Easton, Pennsylvania, which feels a lifetime ago, or in Berkeley, CA, you’ve pummeled forward, adapted, and have always had time to be a selfless and loyal friend. You deserve this more than anyone.

I have no doubt that you’ll achieve all that you set out to do. Never give up on your dreams, especially your creative ones, set your ambitions higher than the moon, and know that I’ll be in your corner regardless. All love man 💪 by @tinociatti

Celebrating Nicholas J. Ciatti, Bachelor of Science in Finance, Minor in Mandarin. Wake Forest School of Business. Cum Laude.

It seems like yesterday when we dropped you off @wfu. Watching you confidently peruse into the sunrise of a new chapter of your life inspired both tears of joy and prayers for good fortune.

In these fast four years, you rose to every occasion on your path and mastered every challenge, both foreseeable and unprecedented, with class, unmatched determination, and passion. You unlocked and opened every door for yourself, took a leap of faith by applying to the esteemed Wake Forest of Business (even after completing most of a Bachelor of Science in Biology), and earned a fantastic career.

Most importantly, you followed your passion, even in times of uncertainty, and never ceased to exude your genuine, heart-centered and sensible self to all those around you.

In simultaneously representing the powerful mottos of your alma mater, Rutgers Prep (“hard work brings true joy”) and that of your new alma mater, Wake Forest University (“pro humanitate”), I am certain that you will continue to achieve and help improve our world for generations to come.
