Choosing one special, quiet place in nature to sit and observe regularly helps forest school students to Reduce stress: Sitting quietly in the outdoors lowers heart rates and stress hormones like cortisol. Regulate Emotions: Quiet time helps children calm down, process big feelings, and release negative energy. Improve focus: Regular stillness trains the brain to pay attention, which helps children concentrate better when they return to indoor classrooms. Something different...... For the first cooking class of this term, the selected dish landed on potato salad.... The kids learned to boil, cut, chop, debone, flake, peel, mix, and season, not forgetting cleaning either. They learned about flavor profiles and the yummy surprise of something a little sweet. This potato salad was absolutely delish and surprised the kids at how fun it was to make. Want to know what the secret ingredient is? 🌴👨‍🍳🌴🫛🌴👩‍🍳🌴🥔🌴🍗🌴🧑‍🍳🌴🍴🌴 Algo diferente... Para la primera clase de cocina del trimestre, el plato elegido fue ensalada de patatas. Los niños aprendieron a hervir, cortar, picar, deshuesar, desmenuzar, pelar, mezclar y sazonar, sin olvidar la limpieza. Aprendieron sobre combinaciones de sabores y la deliciosa sorpresa de un toque dulce. On this beautiful Farms School day, the children listened to the magical folk tale of the 3 sisters, corn beans and squash, who lived together, each contributing their strengths for the benefit of the other. Learning about perma-culture, this relates to the principles that everything and everyone are interconnected, interdependent, and have an impact on one another. It is also a great example of symbiotic relationships. Corn is planted first, growing sturdy and tall. Beans are plated a while later, being able to creep up on the stalks of the corn and providing the soil with nitrogen that the other plants need. Squash is planted last and sprawls over the ground with her big leaves, providing shade on the soil, keeping it cool and moist for the roots of all the plants. Everyone is super excited to witness this trio together firsthand to grow food in this beautiful and efficient way. 🌴 🌽 🌴 🫘 🌴 🎃 🌴 En este hermoso día de la Escuela Agrícola, los niños escucharon el mágico cuento popular de las tres hermanas: maíz, frijoles y calabaza, que vivían juntas, aportando cada una sus fortalezas para el beneficio de las demás. Aprendiendo sobre permacultura, este cuento se relaciona con los principios de que todo y todos estamos interconectados, somos interdependientes y nos influimos mutuamente. También es un gran ejemplo de relaciones simbióticas. El maíz se siembra primero, creciendo fuerte y alto. Los frijoles se siembran un tiempo después, trepando por los tallos del maíz y aportando al suelo el nitrógeno que las demás plantas necesitan. La calabaza se siembra al final y se extiende por el suelo con sus grandes hojas, proporcionando sombra y manteniendo la tierra fresca y húmeda para las raíces de todas las plantas. Last week at Forest School... The kids at Tiny Palms learned about the 7 ways fossilization happens and did an experiment that will demonstrate petrification or permineralization. They are all too happy that they won't have to wait thousands of years to see the result of their 'fossil making' and they can't wait for the next experiment.... 🌴🦕🌴🐾🌴🦖🌴🪳🌴🐚🌴 La semana pasada en la Escuela del Bosque... Los niños de Tiny Palms aprendieron sobre las 7 formas en que ocurre la fosilización y realizaron un experimento que demostrará la petrificación o permineralización. 🌴 Last week at Tiny Palms After playing a game of sorting every little toy and picture they could gather into Vertebrates Invertabrets The 5 groups of vertebrates and finally Warm blooded and cold blooded creatures, the kids each created their chosen skeleton in a pretend 'archeological site'. Understanding vertebrates set the stage leading into fossils and paleontology, geography, and archeology. All things the kids elected to learn about for the second term of forest school. 🌴 La semana pasada en Tiny Palms Después de jugar a clasificar todos los juguetes y dibujos que pudieron reunir en: Vertebrados Invertebrados Los 5 grupos de vertebrados y, finalmente, Animales de sangre caliente y de sangre fría, cada niño creó su esqueleto en un yacimiento arqueológico simulado. Comprender los vertebrados sentó las bases para el estudio de los fósiles y la paleontología, la geografía y la arqueología. This week at Tiny Palms..... Jam packed and filled with fun for the first week of the new term. The sit spot practice offers a structured way to achieve holistic development as the children learn mindfulness, heightened sensory awareness, and observational skills. By sitting quietly in a specific, personal space outdoors on a regular basis, they learn to track environmental changes over time, they observe the life cycles of plants, seasonal weather changes, and animal behaviors. They learn to make detailed inquiries through routines like "I notice, I wonder, it reminds me of." By practicing stillness, children engage all their senses. They learn to identify distant bird songs, notice the textures of bark and moss, and detect shifts in the wind. Sit spots act as a form of meditation for children. They learn to pause, breathe, and process mental clutter. This fosters resilience, reduces anxiety, and builds patience as they learn to sit comfortably with themselves. Spending consistent time in one area helps children develop a "sense of place." It nurtures empathy for local wildlife by teaching them to become a quiet, respectful part of the ecosystem. The art of observation as a skill becomes an all-round advantage for all areas of life and work and not only for areas and industries in the natural environments such as farming, conservation, and permaculture. This learning is extended by encouraging children to document their experiences through nature journaling, sketching, and writing. A strong foundational practice for learning. How many times can a toddler jump over a stream? The answer: At nauseum It might look like simple play, but it's actually a rich, whole-body learning experience. They are building multiple skills without even realizing it, and it's not too obvious to protective adults standing by either. Each jump strengthens gross motor skills - legs, core, balance, and coordination. They are also developing proprioception - understanding where their body is in space - and learning how much force to use to land safely. They are learning to judge distance, assess risk, and adapt. Even small missteps build resilience and confidence as they try again and succeed. They are developing early executive function skills as they navigate each step, each rock, each take off, each landing spot by planning, decision making, and adjusting strategies. They do it over and over and over again because that in itself is deep learning, not just doing the same thing. They refine technique, they build muscle memory, and they gain a sense of control and mastery. Probably the best learning of all is the emotional regulation and joy they experience. They manage their fear as the next jump, now a little higher is a bit scary, and the pride and joy when they make it - "I did it!!" They build intrinsic motivation as they decide to try it again! All this through PLAY - unstructured play. It is far too easy to underestimate the value and importance of unstructured play and far too easy for our children to lack the opportunity.
