Here’s the story of how I went from laid off food writer to winning an award from the magazine that fired me…

In 2020, I was a restaurant reporter at Philadelphia Magazine and part of my job was helping decide who won the Best of Philly awards. Then I got laid off.

That layoff is what led me to start Tiny Table Tours: small-group food tours that go behind the scenes at some of Philadelphia’s best bars and restaurants. Every stop has a story, not just a dish and our guides are working food journalists and restaurant insiders.

This year, Philadelphia Magazine named us the city’s Best Food & Drinks Tour. Full circle. But what means even more to me is the locals who keep coming back, tour after tour.

We run walking tours through South Philly and Fishtown most weekends.

@jjjjjaaaaacccckkkkkiiiiieeeee’s old school hoagie guide to Philly, shot on film!

No Philly food guide is complete without a gorgeous old school interior. This one is Antonio’s deli.

Get the veggie hoagie but ADD a chicken cutlet. The fried eggplant is creamy, the broccoli rabe could not be more garlicky and delicious.

Next up is Ricci’s.

We got the turkey hoagie with alllll the toppings.

Pause for a visit from @amaroschmuck. If you eat enough hoagies, you, too, can be this in love.

Our final stop: Mancuso’s.

… where they make their own mozzarella cheese fresh every day. When we asked if we could take his picture, this king said “I’m not usually the star” but he hit his angles.
