Twice a year, the light lines up with downtown SD’s grid and turns this single street into a burning runway. Call it Scrippshenge’s indie little sister. No mobs at this solar show, though—just a few locals who know the angles and how to shoot ‘em. @tisvlad caught this needle-thread last week during the spring equinox. Palomar Airport Henge • 10/15/26 & 10/16/26

That time of year again when the setting sun aligns perfectly with the runway at McClellan-Palomar Airport in Carlsbad!

This year brought some unusual conditions. Strong Santa Ana winds fueled a fire at Camp Pendleton on Thursday, sending a rusty cloud of smoke offshore, directly into the sun’s path. The winds also reversed the airport’s flight pattern. Instead of watching planes disappear into the distant sunset, we had aircraft approaching head-on, straight into our lenses!

Thursday was incredible. With lighter winds, a steady stream of smaller planes danced around the sun. I had the place entirely to myself. Not another photographer in sight. What a field day!

Friday was the big one. The sun would sit lower on the horizon during its runway alignment, making it less blinding and offering the best chance to capture that elusive unicorn: a jet perfectly silhouetted against the setting sun.

This time, I wasn’t alone. It was a party! Had a blast shooting alongside Randy, John, Brian, Ariel, and several new faces. Unfortunately, stronger winds kept most smaller planes grounded, leaving only the larger jets.

The timing missed perfect alignment by mere seconds, and the unicorn escaped! But one final jet gave us a fighting chance. A few of us shifted left and fired away. My aim was slightly off, placing the jet just right of the sun. I believe my older and wiser photography brothers, Randy and Brian, nailed it! Be sure to check out their shots.

Oceanside Municipal Airport Sunset
Thank you to Emily and the other pilot for circling around sunset and coordinating with me and Zach in an attempt to capture the perfect alignment. We came close, but didn’t happen this time around. The shots still came out nice and had a blast hanging out with @zachcordner this evening. We’ll try again in February.

Does anyone fly a plane in and out of Oceanside Municipal Airport? This shot would be much nicer with a plane flying into the sun as it’s aligned with the runway. Tomorrow (Wednesday) the sun will be slightly lower in the horizon, but I think it may still work. Right around 6:11 pm would be the ideal time to arrive (or depart). Arriving, the plane is larger on the frame as it’s closer to me. Departing may be easier to align with the sun. I’ll take either. After more than 10 months at sea, the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier makes her way into San Diego Harbor, returning to her homeport at NAS North Island in Coronado.

Home to approximately 5,000 sailors and air wing personnel, including Marines from VMFA-314 Black Knights based at MCAS Miramar.
