Taking Time

I drew these gorges from Ithaca using my left hand. I started drawing with my left hand after my shoulder surgery, and I’ve been trying to stick with it because I have to be more deliberate and embrace imperfections. But water doesn’t have to be deliberate. Water doesn’t have imperfections. Water simply flows where gravity tells it to go. Water pools, water shapes, water erodes. Every birth is violent!

As we draw our first breath, we spill blood and scream and claw at the air. And from that moment forward, we continue to fight.

We fight to live freely — as an individual, as a community, as a state, as a species. A stubbornness to not back down. It’s a fight that draws blood and it’s a fight that is in our blood.

It’s a fight that we’ve known since birth and will know until our death!

I’ve struggled to identify as an artist. I struggle even more to share my art. I do not find other artists pretentious, but I set this double standard for myself — I don’t think it is necessary for me to take up space by adding my commentary, especially to a topic where I have privilege or power.

But I want to embrace my art more, especially because I’m now an art teacher for kids. I want to care less about coming off as pretentious, because it’s the innate nature of art to call for attention. I want to make space for more art — real art and not the AI bullsht. I want to help others use art as an expression for emotions, values, cultures, ideologies, and identities.

I want to call myself an artist without shying away, because no matter how I feel about it, I am an artist! by @tkjeo_
