As men, we don’t talk enough. Boys Talk was started to change that. To show men that it is okay to be sad, to show emotion, to be vulnerable. Showing your vulnerability and being willing and open to learn from it shows true strength and acceptance.

Society’s expectations and negative stereotypes tell men that talking openly about our feelings is a sign of weakness and that men should show strength by staying silent, this is simply untrue.

Being willing to talk about how you feel not only helps you, but helps others too. We have all hidden behind a mask at some point — “I’m fine”, “nothing’s wrong” — that just creates a world where it isn’t normal to feel sad or to not succeed. When we show a glimpse of the life behind the mask, we show others that that is okay.

Society’s expectations play a role in why men are less likely to discuss their mental health challenges. Depression has many faces and can take different forms. One person’s experience of depression often differs from another’s. You won’t make someone’s symptoms worse by talking to them about it, the most important thing is starting the conversation.

We are proud to have TNN’s Boys Talk represented at the Kicking off Conversations hub at LFC! @lfcfoundation

Boys Talk is our bi-weekly meeting space for men to speak openly about their mental health and to allow them to acknowledge the things in their lives impacting their wellbeing.

Talking about mental health with people we know can actually feel harder: it can be difficult to listen without any judgement when we know the person, whereas a room full of strangers can feel safe. We listen without judgement to those who speak.

Today is Suicide Prevention Day.

At @tnnboystalk we believe in creating spaces to help men feel safe to open up, be vulnerable and share their experiences. From the big stuff to the not so big stuff.

Learning how to understand our feelings and then sharing them with others is the biggest part of changing the narrative around mental health. If we don’t tell people how we feel, how will they know?

There is a horrible stigma around the word suicide, a dangerous stigma that stops people from seeking help and support. As well as asking men to feel more comfortable opening up and sharing, we need to get more comfortable with asking the hard question…

“Are you thinking about suicide?”

If we don’t ask, how will we know?

At Boys Talk we believe being vulnerable is a strength and not a weakness. If you don’t know how, if you can’t find the words, join us for a meeting and let us teach you.

Big thanks to @autotraderuk for donating £500 to @tnnboystalk 🩷

This means more sessions, more support, and more space for men to talk openly about what’s really going on for them, without judgment.

If you identify as a man and need somewhere to talk, we’re here. Link in bio.

We asked Boys Talk host Matt (@taplinscott) to share with us why he volunteers his time for @tnncharity…

“TNN means a great deal to me because I honestly don’t know where I would be without it. I found the charity at a time when my life didn’t make much sense, and I didn’t know how to move forward.

The meetings gave me a safe space to talk about my struggles. They helped me better understand my thoughts and feelings, and how my experiences had shaped my life.

Over time, I realised I was no longer attending solely to talk about my grief. I had found something even more valuable: a community of people who understood what I had been through and who were there for me when I needed them most.

That’s why I’m still here more than seven years later. The support I received from TNN was so invaluable that I wanted to give something back and help provide that same support to others.

It’s a privilege to host Boys Talk meetings for the charity — creating a safe space, for men’s mental health, supporting others, and most importantly, witnessing the positive changes in people as they grow in confidence.

Wow! Only 9 days in and already raised 44% of their total! We’re very grateful for @track_one_foot_forward choosing us as their 100K in May charity partner.

A bit about the challenge:

Their challenge is to run 100 kilometres in the month of May. To take part all we ask if you donate something to our just giving page.

This cause is incredibly important to us (Tom & Stefan) as we’ve both been personally affected by losing male friends to mental health struggles. Our friend @xandermunro helps operate Boys Talk, which provides an open, honest, and non-judgmental peer support space for anyone who identifies as a man. It’s a place to speak openly about mental health and acknowledge the things in life that impact our well being.

We’d love to have as many of you involved as possible and of course join us for a run.
