As Torontonians decorate our homes seasonally, our wild relatives are also busy preparing for the changing season! 🍂

Birds travel in and out of the city, squirrels gather food, many mammals feast and prepare for rest, and insects, reptiles and amphibians find shelter from the cold.

The places we decorate are shared spaces, depended on by other beings. Our seasonal celebrations provide us with an opportunity to recall and nurture, with reciprocity, the many relationships and places we share.

As we celebrate the new season, let us consider our responsibility to allow our wild relatives to continue their preparations safely. A few ways to decorate with wildlife in mind:

🕸️ Decorate with care: Avoid materials like fake spider webs that can entangle wildlife
💡 Preserve darkness: Turn off unnecessary lights to reduce disturbance of nocturnal species
🍂 Respect what the land provides: Leave natural materials in place, and keep decorations away from areas where wildlife may be resting or sheltered
🎃 Remember: Decorations like pumpkins, gourds and corn can become attractants. Keep them secure and discard when no longer in use

Let’s share this season in coexistence with our wild relatives! 🧡 A squirrel with it's head inside of a carved pumpkin placed on concrete steps covered with pumpkin seeds and autumn leaves. by @toanimalservices

Mika's family says adopting her was the best decision they've made. And we have a feeling Mika would say the same ❤️

Earlier this summer, Mika was one of 5 German Shepherds who arrived at the shelter after being abandoned. At just 9 months old, she had so much of the world left to discover and needed a patient, loving family to help her find her confidence.

And during our Hot Dogs adoption campaign, that's exactly what she found! 🥹

These days, Mika's enjoying backyard adventures, games of tug, learning new tricks and plenty of love from her new family.
"She’s doing amazing, she’s so sweet and goofy [...] she’s so smart, knows a bunch of new tricks, we’re working on recall and trying to build her confidence, overall adopting her was the best decision 💜"

We couldn't be happier for Mika, and we're so grateful to her family for giving her the wonderful life she deserves! Follow Mika's adventures at @worldwith.mika.

It’s easy to take the little things for granted, whether it’s the endless games of fetch, the everyday walks, or the familiar face waiting to greet you when you walk through the door ❤️

They’re such ordinary parts of life that we sometimes forget just how special they really are.

But for Tina, Velma, Max, Blanco, Deja, and so many other dogs waiting at Toronto Animal Services, the chance to experience those everyday moments with a family of their own would mean everything!

At the end of the day, it’s not about having the biggest backyard, the fanciest toys, or the wildest adventures. It’s about having someone to share life with, someone who loves them, and a place where they truly belong.

Maybe you could be that someone 🥹

Momo would like everyone to know that he is VERY fancy and should be treated accordingly!

Naturally, that means plenty of toys, a well-stocked supply of creamy treats, regular admiration and, most importantly, a home befitting a gentleman of his stature. 🧐

Momo is a 2-year-old Exotic Shorthair who is equal parts adorable little gentleman and total goofball! Give him a toy and all that dignity goes straight out the window. He’ll curl himself into a tiny furry ball, roll around, and kick away with his back feet like he has very serious business to attend to.

When he’s not busy doing that, Momo is sweet, affectionate, and perfectly happy to settle in for some quality snuggle time.

And then there’s that face: the golden eyes, tiny nose, and the expression of a man who has seen things.

Basically, he’s got the looks. He’s got the personality. He’s got the tiny squishy face. All he’s missing is a home. ❤️

Momo is available for adoption at toronto.ca/adoptapet! Gray cat with amber eyes sitting on a brown surface, looking up with a curious expression. Text reads: Momo. by @toanimalservices

Max checked. We checked. And still no applications. 🥺

He’s been waiting for his best friend since August, and we’d really love to give him some better news soon.

Max is a sweet, independent 5-year-old who’s looking for an experienced adopter who will appreciate him for exactly who he is. He’d love someone to join him for walks, hikes and outdoor adventures, and just enjoying life to the absolute maximum every day!

Once Max trusts you, his affectionate side starts to shine through, and there’s a very special dog underneath that independent exterior.

Maybe tomorrow really will be Max’s day. ❤️

A balcony might seem like a safe place for your cat to get some fresh air, but one misstep can have devastating consequences. ❤️‍🩹

At Toronto Animal Services, we’ve recently seen cats come into our care with serious and, sadly, sometimes fatal injuries after falling from balconies.

It’s an important reminder that even cats who seem comfortable on balconies can fall. A sudden noise, movement, or distraction can quickly put them in danger!

Help keep your cat safe by keeping them off balconies and keeping balcony doors and unscreened windows closed when your cat is nearby. Keep litter boxes indoors too, so your cat doesn’t have a reason to venture onto the balcony.

Remember: the safest balcony for your cat is one they can’t access. Orange tabby cat with a blue collar resting on a balcony ledge behind black metal bars. The text reads: "Cats don't belong on balconies. Just one fall can be fatal." by @toanimalservices

Getting in was easy. Getting out? That required a little assistance 🦝

When Animal Control Officer Jill came across a group of raccoons stuck in a garbage bin, she was happy to give them the boost they needed to make their great escape!

Some took off without looking back. Others took a moment to get their bearings. And at least one seemed to pause long enough to say thank you 🥹

Safe to say, this crew’s garbage bin adventure ended happily. Just another day for our Animal Control Officers, helping animals big, small, and occasionally stuck in garbage bins! by @toanimalservices

Rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms appear, but there are steps we can take to protect our pets and our community! 💉

This World Rabies Day, it’s a good reminder to make sure your pet’s rabies vaccination is up to date. In Ontario, dogs, cats and ferrets are required to be vaccinated against rabies, even if they spend most or all of their time indoors.

Need to get your pet vaccinated? Toronto Animal Services’ Chip Truck travels to communities across Toronto, offering $10 rabies vaccinations and microchipping for pets with a current City of Toronto pet licence 🐾

Keeping your pet’s rabies vaccination current helps protect them if they’re ever exposed to an infected animal, and helps reduce the risk of rabies in our community!

Remember Kiki?! Stick-obsessed branch manager. CP24 star. Professional Velcro dog.

After 95 days at Toronto Animal Services, Kiki finally retired from shelter life in July when she was adopted during our Hot Dogs adoption campaign and accepted a new full-time position: beloved family member ❤️

And according to her family, she’s absolutely thriving: “She is everything we hoped for and then some!! Super smart, loves everybody and has settled in perfectly. Even her big brother DJ is starting to see how awesome she is!!”

These days, Kiki’s schedule is packed. She has hoodies to model, couches to nap on, a backyard to supervise, walks to take with DJ, and naturally, humans to follow from room to room!

Her family told us they couldn’t believe no one had snatched her up sooner. After watching Kiki wait 95 days, we’re just glad she held out for the right people. Their loss, Kiki’s gain!

The branch manager has officially been promoted to Head of Household 🥹

Thank you to Kiki’s family for choosing adoption, and to everyone who shared her posts and cheered her on while she waited. Happy tails, sweet Kiki! Brindle American Bulldog wearing a bright pink hoodie looking up attentively on a gray pavement. by @toanimalservices
