POSTS STORIES REELS

In the 2024/2025 Academic Year, TOKAN Foundation continued its mission of giving vulnerable children a fair chance at life. We provided educational, medical, social, and legal support, through CRJJC, that touched lives in deeply meaningful ways. With total donations of ₦14,142,470 dozens of children who once had no access to school, healthcare, or legal protection were given the opportunity to learn, to heal, and to hope again.

Our medical partnerships with @drugaidafrica reached over 500 children, ensuring they received essential care and supplies. At the same time, our legal advocacy through @cr_jjc secured the release of children from correctional centers, helping them return to their families and communities with renewed hope for the future.

Throughout the year, we also maintained close relationships with the five Children’s Correctional Centers in Lagos (SCCG, CCCG, SCCB, CCJB, CCSB). In these centers, we stood beside children in conflict with the law, those in need of protection, and those beyond parental control. Our support included scholarships, daily meals, medical treatment, legal services, and in many cases, covering the salaries of teachers so that education within the centers remained consistent and of quality.

Every intervention was more than just an act of service; it was a lifeline, a reminder to each child that they are seen, valued, and deserving of a brighter tomorrow.

We are deeply grateful our trustees, donors, volunteers, and collaborators, who continue to ensure that TOKAN Foundation and CRJJC beneficiaries are realizing their full potential both in school and at home.

Dear Friends, Supporters, Partners and Volunteers,

Every academic year tells a different story.

For some children, returning to school is a familiar routine. For many children we support, school fees, books, lunch, healthcare, recreation and legal advocacy depend on whether someone is able to step in.

This is why TOKAN Foundation and the Child Rights & Juvenile Justice Centre (CRJJC) exist.

We believe that no child or young person should be denied a future of possibilities because of the circumstances into which they were born. Our work takes us into classrooms, correctional centres, hospitals, courts and communities wherever children need support.

From September 2025 to August 2026, we continued to fund school and lesson fees, textbooks, supplies, lunch stipends and welfare needs.

We supported eligible students through national examinations with registration, lessons, transport and meals.

We celebrated 13 graduates and helped children explore their interests through sport, recreation and technology activities.

Our healthcare work included continued partnership with Drug Aid Africa.

Through CRJJC, we represented children in conflict with the law, monitored court proceedings, worked with counsel and justice-sector stakeholders, and delivered Know Your Rights sessions.

Thank you to every donor, volunteer, partner and supporter who helped us show up.

Your support helps sustain vital educational, welfare, medical, recreational, and legal interventions for our beneficiaries.

At TOKAN Foundation, we believe that access to quality education and welfare should be basic human rights, and no child should be so denied either. In 2021, we sponsored the school fees of 22 students for the full year; provided school supplies to over 40 students each term; and undertook extracurricular activities.

For 6 of our students who reside at the Center for Junior Boys in Yaba, we also provided full educational and welfare support (school fees, after school lessons, daily stipends, and essential supplies, such as school bags, shoes, and other materials). We also engaged in regular visits. Their journey was not always smooth and our determination to protect 3 young boys served as the driving force for the TOKAN Initiative.

In February 2018, 3 young boys were unjustly remanded from their orphanage in Lekki to the Correctional Center for Boys in Oregun for misconducts which could have been properly dealt with within the orphanage. We were accused of paying attention to children who had relegated for punishment and our efforts to assist these boys at the Correctional Center led to us being barred from the orphanage indefinitely. We did not relent, instead, we continued to support and mentor these boys at the Correctional Center with weekly visits, tutoring and food donations. We also worked to obtain their release to another orphanage/institution where they would be allowed to attend regular schools. They were eventually released in March 2020, and immediately enrolled in private schools.

Call to Action: These are the types of injustices we seek to address. The young boys missed out on opportunities for meaningful education. But with our intervention, we aim to ensure that they do get a chance to compete with other children while growing into positively impacting adults.

Partnerships with individuals and groups have aided this Initiative and we hope you will also decide to partner with us. We truly believe that collectively we can have greater impact on the lives of more children.

Happy Independence Day, Nigeria!!! by @tokanfoundation

On Saturday, 12 September 2026, the TOKAN Foundation team delivered back-to-school supplies to children across four of the children’s correctional centres we support in Lagos:

📍 Children’s Correctional Centre for Girls (CCCG), Idi-Araba - 45 beneficiaries

📍 Special Correctional Centre for Girls (SCCG), Idi-Araba over 20 beneficiaries

📍 Correctional Centre for Junior Boys (CCJB), Birrel - 28 beneficiaries

📍 Correctional Centre for Senior Boys (CCSB), Isheri - over 20 beneficiaries

Ahead of the delivery, each centre was asked to submit the items specifically needed by the children, allowing us to tailor the support to their immediate requirements. The supplies delivered included stationery, toiletries, school bags, school shoes, sandals, shoe polish, belts, underwear, socks, wristwatches, slippers, and hostel wear for children in boarding school.

Our education support for the new session is already underway. Payment of school and lesson fees, the purchase of school books and other essential educational needs have commenced for our beneficiaries across secondary institutions.

However, there is still much to be done, and donations and support of any amount are warmly welcomed as we continue working to meet the educational needs of more children.

A very big thank you to our donors, partners, volunteers and friends whose generosity continues to make this support possible, every school term. 💙

Together, we are standing with children, building futures and creating possibilities.

🥏 FRISBEE 3.0: 9 Girls. 9 Boys. Two Teams. One Game. One Champion! 🥏

On Monday, 24 August 2026, the energy was high as 18 teenagers came together for Frisbee Tournament 3.0, this time playing as 2 co-ed teams under the guidance of coach Lanre and coach Lauretta.

From fast throws to close plays and plenty of cheering, the children brought their enthusiasm, competitiveness and team spirit to the field. 💪🏽

We were also excited to have members of the Ultimate Frisbee Club in attendance, cheering the participants on and celebrating their progress. Their continued encouragement has helped make Frisbee more than just a game for these children, it has become a space to build confidence, friendships, teamwork and new skills.

What started as a recreational activity in 2025 has grown into something the children genuinely look forward to. And watching them play, compete and cheer one another on reminds us that every child deserves opportunities to discover what they can do.

Here’s to more games, more laughter, more confidence and many more moments on the field! 🥏❤️

Frisbee 3.0 — and we’re just getting started!

Watch out for Frisbee Tournament 4.0 in December 2026.

Today was a reminder of why this work matters. ❤️⚖️

Today, three boys represented by CRJJC walked out of court as free children.

One had been in detention since 2025. Two others had been detained since 2024. For their families, these were not just “cases” on a court list. These were their children, boys they had been separated from for years, with little understanding of what was happening with their cases or when they would come home.

In July, CRJJC met the children at the NCoS Borstal Training Institute, Adigbe. We began tracing their matters across the courts.

For one of the boys, we discovered that his case had already been struck out in March 2026. Yet he remained in detention. We immediately applied for the release order, followed up on its issuance, paid the necessary costs for its transmission, and ensured it was served on the Borstal Institute on Friday, 14 August.

Today, he walked out.

For the other two boys, their case file had to be traced to the Ijoko Magistrate Court. We followed up with the Court, ensured that the boys were produced for today's proceedings and continued to advocate for their release. The Magistrate noted that the complainant appeared to have abandoned the matter, and the boys were released to their families.

After years apart, their parents were able to take their children home.

This is what our work at CRJJC looks like.

It is the hours spent searching court registries. The calls and follow-ups. The journeys between courts. The applications. The filing and transmission costs. The logistics of getting children to court. The conversations with prosecutors and court officials. And, most importantly, the determination to keep going until we find an answer for a child who has been waiting.

These three boys are not statistics. They are children with families, lives and futures waiting for them.

And today, they went home.

There are still other children waiting. Other files to trace. Other families waiting for answers.

We will keep searching. We will keep advocating. We will keep showing up.

Because no child should spend years in detention simply because no one followed up on their case.

Safeguarding children is far more than protecting them from harm. It is about ensuring that every institution they encounter—from the police station to the courtroom, from correctional centres to social welfare agencies—recognises their rights, respects their dignity and acts in their best interests.

A child who comes into contact with the law should never lose the protections that childhood affords. Yet, too often, children are detained when alternatives exist, denied timely legal representation, or left waiting for months—even years—for their cases to progress.

A child justice system can only fulfil its purpose when every stakeholder understands that children are not simply “smaller adults". They require a system designed around rehabilitation, protection and accountability, not punishment alone.

The Child's Rights Act (and the Child's Rights Laws enacted across the states) require that alternatives to detention be considered whenever appropriate. Depriving a child of liberty should never be the starting point—it should always be the measure of last resort.

At the Child Rights & Juvenile Justice Center (CRJJC), we are committed not only to providing essential legal support to children, but also to strengthening public understanding of children's rights and promoting a child justice system that truly safeguards every child.
