At our crew dinner the first thing I said to everyone was that there were 2 outcomes I would be happy with. We either hit our time and achieve the dream I had been making real in my head for 2 years or we have a diabolical death march to the finish.

I’m so often tempted to run smart, run sustainably or even run easy in these races (100 bloody kms!) but one thing I absolutely refuse in this sport (and this life) is to settle for anything less than blowing my own critical mind. I hope that it shows everyone around me just how much I care about being here. How often do we honestly try as hard as we can at something and how do we even know how hard we can try?

I went into Saturday’s SCC100 by @rapidascent with the best body, the strongest mind and the most confidence I have honestly ever had in my life.

I spent 2 years imagining every detail of this race and all I wanted to achieve and felt so weirdly calm on the way to the start-line.

This sport doesn’t care about any of that though and the only thing it promises to give you is experiences you can’t get from anywhere else. Can you see (or hear) the moment where it all fell apart?

At 40km my legs felt like concrete and by the 50km aid station I was done chasing 1st place. There was a glimmer of hope at around 70km that I was closing and my mind was willing my totally empty legs forwards but they had nothing.

I death-marched it in with a smile on my face because we hit one of our goals we chatted about at the team dinner.

If your goal is to be better than other people a few times a year at something you will never be satisfied. If your goal is to try and be better than your own mind thinks possible every single day (and race) then that is a life well-lived I reckon.

To be continued…

On Saturday I raced SCC100km ultra marathon by @rapidascent and this is exactly how I spent about 70kms of the race. It was insane, I didn’t see another human being for so long I was starting to think I had gotten the wrong day or something.

Then I got dropped by about 5 runners haha.

WE HAD A 9 PAGE DOCUMENT, WTF!

Seriously though, for my 100km ultra marathon on Saturday @rapidascent I feel so lucky to have had the best crew I could have asked for. @dandonaldson @peterjharrington who crewed and @edmundparkinson who captured content (and made this pissa reel which was not on the brief) pushed me forward when I didn’t know how to push myself and made one of the most fun days of my life even more fun.

We literally had a 9 page document outlining absolutely everything but what truly mattered to me before even thinking about my goals and how we achieve them together was that these incredible people were having fun.

As you can see, they clearly did and this gets me so stoked.

Thanks does not mean enough guys but you saw it all and a lot of what you saw was only possible because of you and I hope you know that.

Collaboration is key and Saturday was a huge reminder of that for me.

I want to thank the following personals who helped me reach the start line, but more importantly, who help me be the best version of myself every day.

The personals:

Dan Price. I run crazy things by you that are good for me and the world and you tell me I can do them as if it were nothing at all. You know how important it is to be like that and it inspires me to be as much like that as I can for you and others. That is the definition of the ripple effect and you create it.

@nikkichanch You would do anything to help me attempt anything that seems impossible. The queen of open-mindedness and positivity under the hardest pressure; you know who I am and what I can be even when I have no idea.

@rossidalila a best friend and family member I didn’t choose but am grateful for every day for so many reasons including your positive impact on our family. Selfless, hallarious and kind.

@tiabool I mostly run alone but when I don’t I run with you (mostly). I love our check-ins, dog-jogs and riding the highs and lows of sport and life with you and Matt. You are in the Dolomites right now and it looks shit so I’m going to spam you with Torquay content.

Dion. You have seen me race plenty, but this is the first one you will remember. Having you there is everything and I can’t wait to show you that you can work really hard but also play like a kid at the same time and forever. Don’t grow up even when you’re a grown-up.

@majatunved I love you for so many reasons that are not homemade tacos, stuffed peppers, pastas and falafel bowls, but you have been my main source of calories lately and I seriously appreciate it. You have taught me to be ok with feeling selfish even when I’m not being selfish which is very difficult for me and I can’t wait for you to see what we will do together on Saturday.

Family. If my parents taught me one thing it is to do exactly what my heart tells me to do with no exceptions. From my earliest memory, you were the example to explore, spend more time outside than in, work hard and follow my dreams so thanks. Siblings I love you and you would both do anything for me as I would for you; we are lucky for that. by @tombatrouney
