Finally another post!
Recap of my September reading, lots of surprising stuff. Went in with low expectations but was pleasantly surprised. I was a bit disappointed in We Burned So Bright, I was expecting more.
All in all a great month!

*East of Eden* is One of the Greatest Books Iโ€™ve ever read.

Iโ€™ve got some reviews backlogged because life. ๐Ÿ˜… Bear with me.

โ€œI donโ€™t know how it will be in the years to come. There are monstrous changes taking place in the world, forces shaping a future whose face we do not know. Some of these forces seem evil to us, perhaps not in themselves but because their tendency is to eliminate other things we hold good. It is true that two men can lift a bigger stone than one man. A group can build automobiles quicker and better than one man, and bread from a huge factory is cheaper and more uniform. When our food and clothing and housing all are born in the complication of mass pro-duction, mass method is bound to get into our thinking and to eliminate all other thinking. In our time mass or collective production has entered our economics, our politics, and even our religion, so that some nations have substituted the idea collective for the idea God. This in my time is the danger. There is great tension in the world, tension toward a breaking point, and men are unhappy and confused.โ€ - John Steinbeck: East of Eden, Chapter 13-1 by @tomcanread

What a month for reading!! I managed to finish 8 books this month and I gotta say, I would recommend most of these. Can you guess which one I would not necessarily recommend?

Robin Hobb: The Mad Ship
4.75/5 stars (more than the graphic let me choose)

What can I say?
Robin Hobb is a joy to read as ever. The queen of slow burn.

However, this time everything was a bit tighter. Every character had to go through struggles that changed them. Some developments were quite surprising in my opinion.

I love the way the lore is expanded on and there were even some easter eggs here and there for readers of the Farseer trilogy. ๐Ÿฅน

A great read and I cannot wait to follow along for the storyโ€™s conclusion in the next instalment.

Madeline Miller: Circe

๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿˆ and a half out of five

Madeline Millerโ€™s prose is superb. Her writing reads like poetry. I have read Song of Achilles before this and came to expect just that and my expectations were exceeded.

Characterisations on point. No one is purely good or evil, everyone has multiple sides to them. I love the theme of her struggling with her divinity and her immortality.

Absolutely worth the read.
It also helped that I read this while on vacation in Greece.

Tomasz Jedrowski: Swimming in the Dark

๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿˆ out of five

โ€œWe swam, fearless and free and invisible in the brilliant dark.โ€

Beautiful. Heartwrenching.
Iโ€™m at a loss for words. I have dried tears on my cheeks. This book struck a chord within me. The writing was as vivid as watching a film. I donโ€™t know what else to say. Read it. Please. by @tomcanread

Susanna Clarke: Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell

๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿˆ & a half out of five

Absolutely unique and fascinating reading!

I adore Susanna Clarkeโ€™s prose; her eloquence and her wit are marvelous.

This is 1000-page coloss manages to be weird and eerie, mysterious and light-hearted, comical and tragical, all at the same time.

It IS a slow paced book, no doubt. You do need to be happy about faux-academia quirks like footnotes (some extending over several pages!) and old fashioned spellings (to shew you how surprized I am) but itโ€™s also given me a lot of new words for my evergrowing vocabulary as a non-native English speaker and reader (perspicacious, parochial).

The last quarter of the story was a bit of a confusing jumble, however, and I will need to look some things up.

This is, all in all, a clear recommendation for anyone who likes it when Jane Austenโ€™s wit teams up with innovative fantasy elements in an old-fashioned sort of way. by @tomcanread

Matt Dinniman: The Dungeon Anarchistโ€™s Cookbook (DCC 3)

๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿˆ+3/4 out of 5

This book was waaaay too confusing.

Donโ€™t get me wrong, I love the characters and there were some great moments in this butโ€”to be honestโ€”half of the time, I had no idea what was going on with all the different coloured lines and trains.
At some point, I just gave up to try and keep up with everything.

I did laugh at times and there were some twists I loved but all in all probably one of the weaker books in the series. However, I still love the franchise and will absolutely continue.

Just .. canโ€™t do with trains again. For a very long time.

TJ Klune: The House in the Cerulean Sea

๐Ÿˆ ๐Ÿˆ ๐Ÿˆ ๐Ÿˆ & 3/4 out of 5

โ€œDonโ€™t you wish you were here?โ€

This book made me feel so many things.

I laughed out loud.
I ugly cried.
I felt fuzzy and warm.

In a way, the stakes arenโ€™t as high as they are in your typical fantasy book but it still imprints a beautiful message on you after reading.

I loved reading this for its characters and its whimsy and its playlist.

Iโ€™m sure this book will stay with me for a little while longer still.

Daniel Kehlmann: Ruhm (German edition)

Rating: ๐Ÿˆ ๐Ÿˆ ๐Ÿˆ and 3/4 out of 5

Between identity theft and the fracturing of (fictional) reality, this book is a short little novella told in nine stories, separate but intertwined.

Its characters find themselves asking about their own identities and how they themselves and the writer of our story can manipulate them.

Itโ€™s reminiscent of some of David Mitchellโ€™s work (Cloud Atlas, Ghostwritten) which I love so much for its ingenious tapestry of life threads that diverge and then join up again to show the depths of being human.

The nine stories of this book are always verging in danger of gliding off into triviality. The stakes are high for each point of view character but I was quite listless sometimes as to what was actually happening to them.

Itโ€™s a good read and a nice palate cleanser between longer books and genres.

Robin Hobb: Ship of Magic

Rating: ๐Ÿˆ ๐Ÿˆ ๐Ÿˆ ๐Ÿˆ and a half out of five

First one in Robin Hobbโ€™s second trilogy done. โœ…

Usually, I dislike pirate settings. This book proved me wrong.

After finishing the first trilogy in the Realm of the Elderlings series, I took a wee break to give some other authors/books a go. I returned to Robin Hobb and I was not disappointed.

As always, her prose just takes you into this LIVING, BREATHING world full of flawed characters that really stay with you, even after finishing a book. I adore her character work because there is no one who is objectively good or evil. Although some characters you will hate more than othersโ€ฆ

The book has a slow pace that rarely accelerates but I am someone who enjoys this if done well. And oh, does she do it well!

I canโ€™t wait whatโ€™s gonna happen in the next one.
