I had so much fun performing large Japanese calligraphy at Lexus Chatswood 2 weeks ago. I wrote "Omotenashi", which means caring for a guest or customer (this is a key value for Lexus.) Large brush performances require lots of practice, but are really exciting to perform, and are visually striking. (the size of the paper was 2m x 7m). I was recently involved in an exciting project for @sokyosyd restaurant in Sydney. I worked with their amazing design team, and created 4 mural artworks as well as abstract designs for their menus. The largest artwork is 8m long, and they are created on stone surfaces with a specific mixture of calligraphy ink, using my giant calligraphy brush. This was a unique project to be a part of, and it was great working with such a talented and professional team. And I hear Sokyo's food is fantastic : ) by @tomo.co39

Commissioned work for a martial arts organisation in Sydney. These Makimonos (scrolls) describe the rituals and history of the martial arts association, list the skills the student has learnt, name the lineage of masters of the association, and name each of the students who were recently promoted. Each scroll is over 2 meters long, and each required concentration and focus to complete without any mistakes... completing them successfully felt fantastic! I really enjoyed every moment of writing these! by @tomo.co39

I had a great time last Sunday performing Japanese calligraphy @rituals_soundscape (produced by @heartdancers_inc ), part of the @sydneyfringe Festival! I wrote 共鳴 (Kyohmei) which means "resonate" in Japanese, on a 2m x 4m paper with a 1m brush. The live taiko drumming accompanying my calligraphy was performed by Ryuji and Haruka from @taikoz, the drumming was so lively and dynamic! Photo credit: Raúl O. Lejarazu Machin @raulolm.photo 日曜日はシドニーのイベントで書道のパフォーマンスをしました。 アボリジニーを始めとする、国際的なパフォーマーのステージが会場で、20以上の色んな国のミュージシャン、パフォーマーがいたので、珍しく楽屋的なスペースが用意されていて、他の出演者のステージ直前の練習現場を垣間見たのが、興味深かったです。 いつもは録音の音楽がバックグラウンドだけど、今回は生の太鼓演奏者二人とパフォーマンスできて、すごく気持ちがよくて、心躍るダイナミックな音と一緒でした。 明日は味噌ワークショップ。先週と今週、書道とこうじ作りを同時進行でしていて、今8キロの麹が出来上がったところ。味噌ワークショップが終わったら、とりあえずちょいほっとできそう。 by @tomo.co39

Tomoko Oka is a Japanese calligraphy artist based on Gadigal Land/Sydney and Darkingjung Country/Central Coast and holds over 21 years of experience in her craft. I had a fun time running a calligraphy workshop in New Jersey! It was great to meet attendees, and teach calligraphy in the US! 10 people tried Japanese calligraphy, and they did excellent work, especially as this was their first time with a calligraphy brush! アメリカで書道ワークショップをしました。オーストラリアでするのと大きな違いはなく、参加者みんなフレンドリーで、でも書道に取り組む時は真剣で、とても楽しい時間を過ごしました。 by @tomo.co39

I spent 6 months overseas, and I'm finally back home! I stayed in Japan for 4 months, working and practicing different art forms etc, then travelled to England, Switzerland, Spain and the US! 半年オーストラリアを離れて、日本を拠点にヨーロッパに約1か月、アメリカに3週間ほど旅行し、やっと戻ってきました。半年って長いようであっという間。 パフォーマンスに、味噌づくりワークショップに、来月は仕事が詰まってるので、スーツケースの荷ほどきをしつつ、色々とりかかりたいと思ってます。 by @tomo.co39
