When the commentator becomes the racer! I had a blast racing @specmx5 a few weeks ago at the @sccaofficial Hoosier Super Tour at Barber Motorsports Park - genuinely some of the hardest, cleanest, most precise club racing I’ve ever been a part of. I’m leaving the experience even more impressed with Spec MX-5 and the drivers racing there all season. The cars are easy to get up to speed in but demand smooth inputs and exceptional weight management to be quick. Can’t wait to get to the National Championship Runoffs and commentate their big show in a few weeks, good luck to all the drivers! Autocross runs–even at the highest level like the Tire Rack SCCA Solo Nationals–are rarely over about a minute long. And when you’re in Lincoln, Nebraska, facing the prospect of 6 total minutes of seat time, that leaves plenty of time for extracurricular activities.

Well, we have Thursday night covered.

On September 10, we’ll be teaming up with Tom O’Gorman and D.J. Alessandrini from the Lizard Brains podcast (and from, you know, being Tom and D.J.) for a little celebration.

We’re taking over the Mazda Motorsports Town Center tent in the lower paddock and turning it into your parents’ basement circa 1996. That means Nintendo, cheap pizza and minimal décor, but lots of friends.

We’ll have a king-of-the-hill-style Mario Kart tournament with fabulous prizes going to the winners, free pizza for as long as it lasts and, mostly, a place to hang out and chill with other cool people and do fun stuff.

Things should kick off around 6:30 p.m. if the competition portion of the day runs mostly on schedule.

Tom O’Gorman’s raced and won just about everything he’s competed in. IMSA. Gridlife. SCCA. Check, check and check. Now he’s got a new challenge: Spec MX-5.

Tom’s no stranger to the class. As part of the SCCA Super Tour broadcast team, he’s provided plenty of color commentary on Spec MX-5 racing.

Now, Tom’s going to get a new perspective to help his broadcasting: from the driver’s seat.

Mazda Motorsports approached him with the opportunity, and Tom, being the racer he is, quickly accepted it. He’ll compete in Spec MX-5 this weekend, August 29-30 at Barber Motorsports Park.

When Tom’s not behind the wheel, though, you will continue to find him behind the mic of the broadcast, too, for the “majority of the races,” he says.

Surprise!! I’m going racing this weekend in Spec MX-5!
As many of you know, I’ve been doing a lot more racing commentary lately. It all started with the 2018 SCCA Runoffs and has grown to include the SCCA Super Tour broadcasts full-time this year. About a month ago, my friends at Mazda Motorsports reach out out of the blue with a crazy pitch; we’re fans of the broadcast and we know you’re a racer…what if you, the color commentator, raced Spec MX-5 at the last Super Tour to see what its all about? Twist my arm!! 😂😂

I’m really excited to get hands-on with the car and class after talking about their races all season, and what a cool idea from Mazda to shine some light on this newer class by throwing me in the deep end to see exactly what Spec MX-5 is like. Plus, it’s the first-ever Super Tour at Barber Motorsports Park, I’ve been to the track a lot, the entry list is packed, and I’m still commentating the majority of the other races across the weekend. Can’t wait, already feeling race-y 😈

I’m very grateful to Mazda Motorsports for this opportunity, and to SCCA and Driver’s Eye Live for playing ball to make this happen. Excited to share my experience, and to be able to present this class even better in the future! by @tomoracing

The year of the nutty supercar continues this week at GingerMan, I’ll be driving the Team @vitourusa Corvette ZR1 in Track Battle at Gridlife Midwest! Really looking forward to some proper time attack, and the opportunity to do it in an incredible car. The last C8 ZR1 I drove was on 300TW tires, really excited to see what it can do on some track-focused tires! by @tomoracing
