To remember what 25 years can make us forget, I went back through these old photographs.

When I saw smoke rising from the World Trade Center with my own eyes, I couldn’t understand what was happening. Then, as the tower began to fall, for a split second I thought, “It looks beautiful, like flower petals falling.”

But immediately after, I understood instinctively what must be happening to the people over there. Suddenly, it felt as if every cell in my body was screaming. I grabbed my camera and started taking pictures. Looking at them now, I realize how quickly all of this happened.

After that, I went to Union Square every day. People gathered in small circles, asking each other, “What did we do wrong?” “How did America become a country where something like this could happen?” What struck me was that instead of simply blaming others, they kept questioning themselves. I was deeply moved by what I saw.

Twenty-five years later, what I don’t want to forget isn’t only the towers falling. It’s the people who gathered in the park afterward, questioning themselves and hoping for peace.

That day, I saw the strength of New York.
And maybe, I saw the strength of humanity.

I think that’s why, ever since then, I’ve wanted to understand more of the world, and why I’ve kept asking what it means to be human, and what humanity really is.

Yesterday, Maggie began her journey to heaven. Around noon, we shared a quiet, gentle moment together. Then, as if she had made her own quiet decision, she lay down on her side and, for a few minutes, moved as if softly exhaling, and little by little, her awareness drifted away from her body. In the instant her eyes gently dimmed, I realized. She had set off. It was so Maggie - willful, moving at her own pace, and yet full of grace. The nine years we shared were truly irreplaceable.
