Harriet Brown & Tomu DJ - Holiday (Official Music Video)

I don’t really know how to promote music in the AI age but I want to say some words about this project. Most people I work with are longtime friends but HB and I connected recently through music.

We both did remixes for @djbeeso (theirs was my favorite) and eventually found out we both have ties to the Bay Area. I was grateful they reached out and we met up for some recording sessions a while back. I loved the songs we made (“Holiday” here was one of them) but couldn’t figure out how to finish them or what to do with them. We kept in touch loosely and met up for more sessions earlier this year.

Working with Harriet has been such a breath of fresh air and reminded me of why I fell in love with producing in the first place. The five-song project spans R&B, indie pop, alt rock, hip hop, Baltimore club and (honest) even chamber music, but beneath the genre tags and tropes is something way more significant. My favorite part of collaborating is creating something that represents not only all artists involved, but what is happening between them during the process. The sound is one of discovery and connection.

In the five or six times we met up to make this project, I always felt compelled to be as present as I could and take the work as seriously as possible. It’s a rare opportunity to get to work with an amazing artist with their own style, and an even rarer opportunity for your own style to fit in so well with theirs. We would make one or two songs per session and spent the last two arranging and mixing the project, and filming two music videos, the first of which you see here.

The full project arrives early November. We won’t be “releasing” official singles for it but you can hear another track from the album “Call” on Harriet Brown’s @nts_radio show. Cortado with soy #music taken in Marin Headlands by @tomudj
