“Forever ONE” is of particular significance to me because it marks a painful time in my life after I had just lost everything in a failed business. But it was in this darkness that I found art and created the 1st-ever sneaker out of @lego – the rest is history. taken in Phillips by @tomyoo23

👀FULL REVEAL of CHIE Chapter 1! This is the story of Chie, an Asian American girl who becomes the 1st woman to play in the NBA🏀. @charletchung (whose Japanese name is Chie) and I created this character to inspire our 1-yr. old daughter to believe that anything is possible and also to show our 2-yr. old son that a woman can do anything a man can💪🏼.

“CHIE Chapter 1: Genesis” not only lays the foundation of who Chie is but also captures the magic moment when she falls in love with basketball – as she watches the GOAT hit the Last Shot. TUNE IN this week as I’ll be revealing all the details! by @tomyoo23

@gucci reached out because they wanted to feature me in an official collab that would promote their 1977 sneaker… this was what I came up with 🤌🏼. This never got to see the light of day because of legal concerns around the use of the @lego trademark 😭.

To this day, this shoe is one of my favorite builds ever 💙. I was really pleased with how all the details came together, down to the decals that I hand cut and applied. Even the photoshoot worked out perfectly, as I was able to find this beautiful spot in a random park near Pasadena to capture this footage 📸.

The piece now resides as a permanent part of Gucci’s archive in Italy 🇮🇹. by @tomyoo23

🔥Here’s the CHIE jersey I designed - inspired by the 1998 Finals jersey that MJ wore when he hit the Last Shot. Of course, watching the Last Shot is what drives a young Chie to become the best basketball player in the world.

🍾It’s DONE!!! After months of living on my dining table and me working on it a little bit at a time in the wee hours of the night, this epic piece is complete. Entitled “YEOWANG” (translated as Queen 👸🏻 in Korean), this sculpture measures over 4 ft tall and 3 ft wide and is comprised of 6,166 hand-glued LEGOs.

It is a profoundly personal piece to me as it is an homage to the 2 most important women in my life – my wife (@charletchung) and daughter (Gal). Choosing the Queen of Hearts over a male face card was my way of acknowledging the inequality that persists between the genders and expressing my hope that, someday, everyone in the world will view my daughter as an equal to my son. It was also necessary for me to emphasize my identity as a Korean-American 🇰🇷🇺🇸. The mirrored imagery of the card allowed me to perfectly capture this duality by changing the top left corner of the card to say “queen“ in Korean while leaving the bottom “Q“ in English, unchanged. Lastly, the 3D glasses are my nod to the crypto community that’s accepted and supported me - inspiring and elevating me more than I can say.

Ad: The LEGO adidas Originals Superstar drops today!

My collab with @LEGO and @adidasOriginals was inspired by the style of the Black artists who ushered in the golden age of rap and hip hop in the 80’s. My vision was to encapsulate the energy and culture coming out of New York City during this time. Of course, no reference to rap and the Superstar would be complete without rocking a pulled-out tongue and removing the shoelaces!

Ad: When I created my first ever sneaker made from LEGO bricks back in 2015, I knew this day would come – the day when @LEGO would collaborate with @adidasOriginals to release an official sneaker set. Here it is… the LEGO adidas Originals Superstar.

Of course, when the LEGO Group reached out and asked me to put my own spin on the build, I had to take it back to what the Superstar means to me – hip hop and rap. So my design was inspired by the style of the Black artists who ushered in the golden age of rap and hip hop in the 80’s. I wanted to capture the swag of the era (out of NYC) while at the same time give a nod to the pillars of the culture - DJing, MCing, B-boying and Graffiti.

The set will release on July 1st at LEGO.com and in LEGO stores.
