I’m doing a quick drummer highlight with this one just because they don’t always get enough love on insta. This guy (@theavantgardner , awesome handle, too) held down the beat for both the @tommorello band AND the All Star Jam at the end. I picked this one as the lead because he’s in focus as Bruce and Tom are blurred (but recognizable) in front of him. I also really like the one of @themattcameron with a blurry @taylormomsen in the foreground. by @tonechasing

Alright I gotta share these shots of @grandson because I was in the *right* spot, allllllmost the perfect spot. I didn’t get to shoot his first set because I was set up at the chrysalis; I’m so glad he guested with @tommorello and friends and then had a feature for “This Land is Your Land”.

Originally, I’d planned to roll out my photos from @powertothepeoplefest bit by bit, but I’m tired of the slow roll, so I’m gonna share my photos more quickly :)

@tommorello and Friends. The 4th shot is my favorite because of what you can’t see. @romanmorello1 had just played a scorching solo and Tom came over to give his son a kiss on the head and put an arm around him.

This set rocked. @serjtankian coming out was insane — I’ll never forget my baby brother and I passing Toxicity back and forth between our Walkmen — and all of the other guests, too. Go watch the livestream of this set, if it’s still available by @tonechasing

The first cassette tape I ever owned was a hand-me-down copy of Soundgarden’s Superunknown, given to me in 3rd grade by my Very Cool Big Brother out of his box of cassettes.

Here’s another photo I think needs to stand alone. During “The Ghost of Tom Joad”, when @tommorello and @springsteen traded or dueled solos, they kept edging closer to each other with smiles on their faces. This isn’t a *perfect* photo, but I think it’s pretty close. Their shared joy is infectious and I think this might have been my favorite moment to photograph.

And what a gift to live in this world and time. It might be broken, but it’s fixable. Too often, I think we try to hold joy as though it were an object, a possession, a nounable thing. But no; joy is porous. It leaks into and through us, and we become more porous the more of it we experience. To live vicariously rightly, as art permits us to do, is to admit that life multiplies when we let another’s passion filter through us.

To share in righteous passion is the only way forward.

Jack Sabbath was an unexpected gift for everyone in person or who watched the livestream. He’s a human unicorn, a person so singularly unique that it’s hard to know how to respond — do I laugh? do I stare in wonder? do I close my eyes and imaging Ozzy? do I point my camera at him or gape? — but mostly I think we don’t respond, we just feel. His band rocked (legitimately killed it), and I couldn’t stop smiling ear to ear as I watched.

I love the second and third photo especially. Jack moves a lot on stage (which should come as no surprise), so ICM is usually the *wrong* call, but I needed needed needed to try to capture the fever dream of the moment. I think those shots actually did what I abated them to do.

I have to share this one. Taken during the All Star Jam at the end, a total unicorn of a moment to capture Dave and Bruce in the same photo. Two of the biggest rock stars of their respective generations singing and playing together. Utterly surreal.

I’m gonna mostly pick individual shots I like mixed in with some of the acts we got to see.

So, I got to photograph @springsteen and it’s the most pinch-me moment of my photography career. I don’t know how to pick a favorite or a lead, so I’m just picking this one, which was the first one I took as he walked to the mic. Most of the others in this small series are from the first song — Streets of Minneapolis — and you should go watch the livestream to see it (if it’s still up). There are a few here after @tommorello joined him onstage for “Ghost of Tom Joad” (and the rest of the night as the two held court together); I’ll be sharing more of Tom and Bruce and everyone else later, but this is just to say, “I did this and I am so grateful.”

I’m writing about the day because I have to, but I also have to share my photos just to share them. You’ll see some pretty words at some point. #springsteen #powertothepeople #tommorello #merriweatherpostpavilion by @tonechasing

I reckon most of yall know I like to move my camera ‘round while the shutter shuts.

This is from autumn 2024. The starlings must murmur more; here, they froze in motion over a too-lit scene of the creek drinking the trees.

Photographer friends: yes, I had to clean up the evidence of sensor dust.

Musician friends: I always think this photo goes with a lot of your songs. by @tonechasing
