Shimmering Trace Echoes

Sinsir | Ancestors (2016) was a photographic display from a series of art installations called AW3 (Art Window 3). It was a large window on street level of my mother Sylvia's house at 3 Parnell Street, Clonmel, Ireland.

During the time I lived there, I would periodically do an art installation, mainly from found objects. It was a way to fill a large, unused shop window and also entertain passers-by.

This 'Sinsir | Ancestors' install came about after I was given several photo albums from my deceased uncle Bernard's personal effects.

I don’t recognise anyone in the collection of images I used here. Almost all the photos are unnamed and undated, although some of the mounted items were clearly printed in Dungarvan, Co. Waterford; the home of my father Vinny and his brother, Bernard, who was the last surviving member of the Walsh family in that coastal town.

I guess some of them are from Waterford but several have an English/US feel to them; a few even look Russian! I imagine they're a mix of family and friends but I've no way of knowing how I may be connected.

They could be anyone's ancestors; which is why I made the installation. There are some beautiful portraits here and I'm very taken by the individualism and humanity on view.

As my friend Conor said the other day, 'we all run out of road'. All that remain are memories and, if we're lucky enough, shimmering trace echoes like these photographs.

INTRODUCING OUR QUEER DEBS YARD PARTY CLOSER - @toniewalsh

“Old enough to be an original disco boy, Tonie Walsh is one of the resident djs at Ping Pong Disco.  He officially retired from club work in 2006 but enjoys being dragged to leftfield gigs like Dublin Modular, offering some age parity and a chance to delve into his unenviable record collection. Apart from funk and disco, he adores deep house and anything with lush strings, a minor key and rising baseline. He’s been known to drop opera riffs and even the sound of steam trains in his sets so expect a few curveballs.”

We can’t explain how excited and honoured we are to have Tonie at our Pride Yard Party. For all of us at Dublin Modular, Tonie has also been a friend, an inspiration and a true icon. Tonie’s passion for music, culture and community reminds us that dancefloors have always been more than places to party.. they’re places of connection, expression, solidarity and joy.

To put it simply we get to have Queer Debs because of people like Tonie.

Can’t wait to dance with you all tomorrow xx

The Debt is Settled | Performance

Really stoked for this upcoming event at Clonmel Arts Festival.

The idea began as a lecture but morphed into something less dry and academic, more ‘theatre’. There’ll be words, for sure, but also music and projections.

As a son of Clonmel, I’m really proud to present this show, The Debt is Settled, as part of the Vincent Hanley Summer School.

Another son of Clonmel, Vincent Hanley was Ireland’s first celebrity AIDS death but he’s also fondly remembered for being a great person and a giant of music television and radio broadcasting.

I’m hoping this show will help people not only make sense of the AIDS pandemic but appreciate why, after thirty years, we need to record and ritualise our memory of that difficult time.

If you’re in or around Clonmel, Co. Tipperary in early July, I’d love to have your company as I debut this new show. Tickets available at www.junctionfestival.com

Making a physical club flyer in the age of digital marketing.

For its 20th anniversary in June 2013, Horny Organ Tribe (HOT) commissioned our in-house designer, Aiden Grennelle, to produce a souvenir flyer.

Aiden took a nude sculpture by US artist Jeff Koons (kissing his then wife Illona Staller) as his starting point. HOT djs Aoife Nic Canna and yours truly had our upper bodies scanned and 3D-printed as maquettes measuring 8 x 5 cm. The resin maquettes were then photographed and stitched onto the bodies of Koons and Staller.

The original HOT monogram (logo) was designed by Ray O’Brien and deliberately calls to mind the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic ‘ankh’ sign that symbolizes protection, renewal and eternal life.

The HOT As Phuck flyers, 205 x 255mm, were printed on 260gsm card, used three fluorescent inks and black topped by metallic gold. The main body typeface is Gridnik.

At a time when physical club flyers had all but disappeared, 500 lithographic prints were produced as part of a souvenir ‘goodie bag’ that also included a limited edition digital print of a HOT light installation by Ciarán McClelland and two of Seán Gilmartin’s iconic photos of Elevator events. (Both Ciarán and Seán are since deceased.)

The cost of printing the flyer, inclusive of scans but exclusive of designer fee, was €770 (€1.54 each) or approx €2.07 each in 2026 values. We had no commercial sponsorship.

The third episode of our NTS residency airs tomorrow afternoon at 4pm on channel 2. Joining us is the living legend; Irish DJ, archivist and activist Tonie Walsh.

Across this hour-long (and at times deeply emotional) conversation, Walsh traces the evolution of Dublin’s queer club culture from the 1980s - shaped by criminalisation and resistance - through to the era of marriage equality. The discussion not only charts a vibrant nightlife history, but also reflects the profound social transformation Ireland has undergone in recent decades.

We’re incredibly grateful to Tonie for his time, generosity, and depth of insight.

This episode marks the conclusion of our residency with NTS. We’re immensely thankful for the opportunity and hope you’ve enjoyed the shows along the way.

Tune in tomorrow from 4pm on Channel 2.

Bríd (Brigid) | Imbolc

The cult of the Irish Celtic spring goddess, Bríd (“the exalted one”), was so strong that, as Christianity developed in the early Middle Ages, her feast day of Imbolc (February 1) would be overlaid with the death of a significant Druidic-Christian nun of the same name.

After all this time, it’s hard to discern the boundary between myth and history but clearly the goddess *and* the nun/saint were hugely important to my Irish ancestors. Her feast day falls almost halfway between the Winter Solstice and the Vernal Equinox.

It’s all about the arrival of Spring and nothing illustrates this more clearly than the Crois Bhríde or sunwheel (swastika). Light, growth, lambing and poetry; not a bad combination to take stock of on Bríd’s feast day.

This Imbolc 2019 installation comes from my studio window at my mother Sylvia’s house in Co. Tipperary. It was my goodbye to No. 3 Parnell Street, Clonmel.

Wherever you are, beannachtaí na Féile Bríde ort. May Brigid the Shining One bless you on this day of hope and growth.

Alfred Alphonso | Dublin dj & urban sophisticate

2/2

Alf’s next level transgressive ‘exoticism’ and queerness also came with a massive serving of classiness. His dress sense was as measured as his lithe movement. He was well-read and connected.

As barman and manager of Minsky’s (later renamed Shaft), Alf was instrumental in getting me a dj residency in what became a louche, late night rendez-vous for us Twenty-Somethings in search of fun and mischievousness, following the fire that destroyed the Hirschfeld Centre in 1987. We were dancing for our lives at this stage and willing some new fabulousness onto Dublin’s battered streets.

Alf’s studio flat at North Gt. Charles St became my pied-à-terre when I returned from LDN in 1991. ‘Legendary’ has became a much over-used descriptor but the soirées and seshes at Alf’s, often extending across the entire house, were…beyond. Not long after, we would live together in Ranelagh.

In time, he carved out a role for himself in the hospitality and entertainment industry, becoming a much loved dj to many.

In the 40 years I knew him, his boundless generosity and kindness made Alf a touchstone for any number of waifs and strays and others in need of the psycho-emotional and cultural support that had been denied him as a gay man growing up in east Asia. Everything he had he shared willingly and with great distinction.

His life could be messy and contrary but it was always fabulous. And never empty.

Cancer bested him in the end, a few days after his 63rd birthday.

Gutted we’ll never have another moment together.
So long, doll! xx

Alfred Alphonso | Dublin dj & urban sophisticate

The death of any friend is a wrench, all the more so after a lifetime of memories. But the news hits even harder when distanced by a continent and the practical obstacles preventing me from *just* rocking up with some mutual friends in Dublin as we remember our old pal, Alf.

I need to remember, to say goodbye.

We became instant buddies not long after Alf arrived in Dublin. It was the late 1980s, that grim, desaturated decade of crushing poverty, relentless emigration and the savagery of AIDS. But we had youth and creativity on our side with boundless hope and optimism egging us on.

It was impossible to miss Alf in a city predominantly white and monocultural. His luxurious, long black mane and fem-boi countenance screamed ‘exotic’ and 'queer'. It also caused him no end of othering and harassment in his native Singapore which was one of the reasons he escaped that rigidly stratified society. (Continued)
