The scarcest thing in business isn't AI talent or design talent. It's judgment.

So much of who I am is a result of this powerful woman. My temperament, my view of the world, my desire to achieve, how I treat people. In my weakest moments she remains the person I look to for guidance and for support. Something I thought I would graduate from a long time ago 🤣. I am so very grateful for her as a role model and teacher - grateful for her to be my mother. It was so nice to spend a few days with her in my new home. I get the question ‘why i love costa rica’ and the small town I spend a lot of time in, Santa Teresa, a ton. Here’s my answer.

The first thing is density. Many of the things I love, and want to do for the rest of my life, are in insanely close proximity. Within a 5m ATV ride I can work out, walk a sandy beach, eat at an incredible restaurant, read a book at a cafe with a view of the jungle and ocean. I didn’t realize how much I valued this accessibility until I tried it living here.

To do any of the above things; at no point will I have had to put on socks or a shirt. When you contrast that to New York or Vancouver, doing things regrettably does require socks, get-ready time, commuting time, and the feeling of social obligation to dress decently. In Santa Teresa it’s a pair of shorts you plan to get sweaty in, for my soft western feet, sandals, and you’re off to the races.

You’re close enough to the equator here where the sun rises and sets on a 12 hour schedule all year round and from Dec - May Santa Teresa is sunny every single day. My body has responded really well to this. I’ve struggled to sleep most of my life but in Santa I get tired when I'm supposed to get tired. I find it easy to be in bed by 9pm and up by 6am. I never thought this would come naturally to me.

The security, the regulation, and the conveniences we have in the developed world net out very positively. By the same notion it’s very clear to me that we gave up stuff for these things. There’s something unbelievably liberating about ripping around on ATVs with surf boards on dirt roads as part of your every day life. It’s just fun.

I’ve long held the view that happiness is in the mind and something you can control in spite of your environment. I still find this view attractive, and, frankly, probably pretty productive. But it’s also stunningly clear to me our minds respond so positively to heat and nature. Trees, plants, ocean, rivers - being situated around these things while still being able to work productively. That I can do that is amongst the things I’ve been most grateful for in my life.

Alright. That’s the take. Hope to see you in the Nicoya Penninsula soon. Pura vida mae!! taken in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica by @tonnerjackson

From startup idea to team retreat selfies with 23 staff, meet @tonnerjackson the founder of @course.studio and LOI alumni from 2017👇

If you haven’t had coffee with him yet, here’s some background on his story.

📌 Q: His top takeaway from @loiaccelerator?
☕️ A: “The upside of working alongside high performing individuals is not to be understated. I still lean on so many of the founders in my cohort for different business challenges. Some of us are doing different things now but the fundamental thing that made it so special was being around peers I admired, looked up to; that pushed me.”

📌 Q: #1 thing you’d tell your 20 y/o self about being a founder?
☕️ A: “Be customer obsessed and make software. My biz in LOI was a meal kit delivery servic rock uphill. Perishables are hard. Delivery is hard. Make things people want that have zero marginal cost. I think many of us take for granted the place in space and time we inhabit as it relates to the internet + software revolution.”

📌 Q: What are you most excited about with your career today?
☕️ A: “Working with some of the worlds leading content creators to make incredible products that are so fundamentally derisked by having really low customer acquisition costs. I feel lucky that I admire many of our customers, like Dr Becky, Esther Perel, Colin and Samir, Sophia Amoruso, Miss Excel, and more.”

📌 Q: How can the LOI community help you with intros?
☕️ A: “If there’s a creator you admire and have a thesis for a product, I’d love to hear it!”

📌 Q: Where do you call home if founders wanna meet up?
☕️ A: “Manhattan or Santa Teresa, Costa Rica”

Well, there you have it folks.

Even though it’s been a few years @tonnerjackson has graduated, he’s still staying in touch with his cohort peers and building software solutions around problems that interest him.

Be sure to hit up Tonner with any questions you have about the creator economy world.
