And the moment has arrived, Melkamu’s last first day of high school. His excitement is palpable. What you don’t see is his proud mother behind the camera remembering, with a bit of emotion, all of those first days of school before this one!! by @tonygerber_

In 2007 I was in Goma, DRC making a film about bush pilots for NatGeo. At this time, the massive displacement of the population after the Rwandan genocide next door, led the IDP camps to overflow. The small airport in Goma was the hub for all aid flights yet 1/8 of its runway had been destroyed in the ‘02 eruption of Niyaragongo, an active volcano just outside of town. https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5ipn9b This photo of me filming was taken by a photographer who hung out on the runway at Goma airport selling portraits to passengers as they disembarked or boarded flights. (His signature is at the bottom of the print.) This was an extraordinary time filming in a remarkable, resilient part of the world. My heart aches for the people of North Kivu and Ituri Provinces ravaged by deadly Ebola. Where is USAID when it’s most critically needed? 💔 by @tonygerber_

Calling all filmmakers and film lovers. 🎬

Swipe for prompts to spark creative resistance—host a screening of banned or overlooked films, share immigrant stories, reframe propaganda, create short videos on behalf of silenced voices, and more.

Film can challenge narratives, amplify voices, expose injustice, and imagine new possibilities.

“Damned in the USA (1991), British filmmaker Paul Yule’s brilliant documentary about censorship in America, is a great movie. An important movie. Everyone must see it.” —Washington Post

The 68-minute documentary, originally produced for Channel4 in the UK, features interviews with Donald Wildmon of the American Family Association (AFA), juxtaposed with footage of works by Robert Mapplethorpe, Andres Serrano, and others. The film’s release in the states prompted the AFA to sue to block its release. The lawsuit was defended brilliantly by Martin Garbus (who will join @theisaacbutler Isaac Butler, author of The Perfect Moment: God, Sex, Art, and the Birth of America's Culture Wars @bloomsburypublishing and producer Jonathan Stack for a discussion of the Culture Wars, and this landmark trial.) When: May 1st at 7pm
Where: Theater One, Theater Row, 410 W 42nd Street, New York, NY.
Tickets: $20 / $10 for students (supporting the Garbus/NYU Law School Scholarship) https://bfany.org/theatre-row/shows/damned-in-the-usa/ taken in Downtown Brooklyn by @tonygerber_
