There is a version of the AI conversation in music that gets boring almost immediately, mostly because it treats the machine like the whole story. The better question is what an artist gives up when the uncomfortable part of the work gets skipped too early.

Tooker’s (@tookermusic) answer is simple: vulnerability, repetition, bad first takes, strange accidents, and the slow development of the ear that tells you when something finally feels like yours.

That makes “Wake Up” a fitting record to place beside this conversation.

The track began in Berlin in 2020, lived for years in unfinished form, carried enough of a pulse to survive on dancefloors before it was fully complete, and eventually became a SONARA Records release from Nico Stojan, David Mayer, and Tooker, with JAW of dOP on vocals. It is also the first SONARA release following Nico Stojan’s passing this summer, which gives the record a heavier emotional throughline than a standard release push could carry.

Tooker talks about AI with more nuance than a simple rejection would allow.

He uses technology, believes it can open doors, and sees no issue with tools that help clean, organize, test, or move ideas along. His line sits somewhere more personal. AI can offer possibilities, but it cannot give a producer lived experience, taste, grief, friendship, touch, or the private reason a track needs to exist. “Wake Up” took years, multiple hands, and the right vocal before it found its final shape, which may be the clearest argument in the whole piece. Some records need time because the time is part of what the record becomes. by @tookermusic

Another SONARA Session in the books, and this one was something else 🌅

Six days on the island with a small group who came to grow, and left with more than they expected. New tracks, new skills, and the kind of connections that only happen when you live, cook, swim and make music together for a week.

This is what it's really about: the one-on-one sessions every single day, yes, but also the late-night studio moments, the boat trip, the dinners that ran long, the graduation night at Marlin, and watching people surprise themselves.

Thank you to @cioz_ and @iorie for pouring so much into everyone, and to the artists who trusted us with their week. You made it what it was 🙏

Some tracks take years to find their true form. “Wake Up” was born in Berlin in 2020 when Tooker wrote it during a period of solitude and reconnection. Nico Stojan heard it the next day, loved it, and together they built it up from a raw idea. It sat for years until JAW laid down vocals and gave it a voice. In the past year, David Mayer brought a whole new dimension that brought the track to where it is today.

This is the first release from SONARA since Nico passed this summer. The first of many of his unreleased tracks we’ll bring out in his honor.

This is why Mirage exists. New music, brought to a little island in the middle of the Mediterranean, and a floor that receives it with open ears.

Rony came all the way from Dubai for this one, and the room gave it right back. Grazie fratello 🤌🏼

Tonight we close the season with Maysa Lozano from Perù, alongside live set by @nudosound , @tookermusic with a hybrid live percussive set , Ceck and Cuju. Marlin, midnight. Last one, best one.

And here’s the part that makes us most proud: both Rony and Maysa first came to this island as students at SONARA Sessions music production retreats at @sonarastudiosardinia. Now they’re back as international touring artists. That’s the whole story of what we’re building.

Excited to share that I’ll be joining SONARA Sessions in Sardinia this October as a mentor.

It’s a week on San Pietro Island, a small island just off the Sardinian coast, with only 6 students and a small group of mentors. What makes it different from most retreats is the structure: it’s not workshops all day. Each mentor runs one workshop, and everything else is one-on-one sessions, every single day. The time goes exactly where you need it, whether that’s production, arrangement, mixing, DJing or talking through where you’re headed as an artist.

I’ll be sharing the week with @anjaschneiderofficial , @almaernst__ and @tookermusic.

📍 5-11 October, SONARA Studio Sardinia

What the week looks like:
6 students only, deep one-on-one mentoring every day
A workshop from each mentor
Three meals a day cooked by a private chef
Sauna and cold plunge in the daily flow
