Meet Gary Davey 🥊

At his kickboxing gym in Pontypool, Gary is changing young people's lives. 70% of his class have additional learning needs, and new grants mean kids whose families can't afford it can get six weeks' free training.
He's also helped bring a major international kickboxing tournament to Cwmbran, with teams from 8 or 9 countries and around 2,000 people expected. That means our Torfaen kids won't have to travel to compete.

Local Labour councillors Caroline Price and Gaynor James have been backing Gary every step of the way, and he's proud to be a Labour man, like his dad and grandad before him. ❤️

This is what we're about in Torfaen: working with our communities and talking them up. 💪

The memorial gates at Pontypool Park are looking stunning again ✨

Thanks to Torfaen Council and Pontypool Community Council working together, the gates have been welded, repaired and repainted, and the work was done by local Pontypool businesses 💪

Cllr Gaynor James, who is also Torfaen’s Armed Forces Champion, says it matters all the more because these are memorial gates, honouring our veterans 🌺

🚜 Work has started on our canal!

We know how much our canal means to local people. We said we'd get to it, and now it's happening. ✅

Over the next 3 weeks on the southern stretch:
🌿 Weed cutting
🪣 Dredging
💧 Clearing culverts
🌳 Removing fallen trees
🚶 Tidying the towpath

And we're not stopping there. The next phase, down to the Newport boundary, is already being planned, followed by regular annual maintenance. 📅

🎥 Watch Cllr Jo Gauden, Cllr Peter Jones, Cllr Sue Morgan and Cllr Colette Thomas out on the towpath 👇

❤️ Labour, investing in our heritage, nature and active travel for future generations.

🎨 Talking Pontypool UP, not down.

This weekend, young people from the Youth Service are giving up their Saturday AND Sunday to turn the hoardings outside St James' Church into a brand new mural, with the canal, the Folly and other local landmarks all taking shape on Hanbury Road.

Cllr Jo Gauden went down to see it happen: "There's a real buzz here, it's really exciting. I'm so happy to be part of it."

It's all part of Pontypool Towns Together. Labour councillors have been out rolling up their sleeves alongside residents, businesses and community groups to sweep, litter pick, clean shop fronts and put in new planters, with more on the way.

Some people only ever talk our towns down. We'd rather get stuck in. 🌹

Council Leader Anthony Hunt reports back on a busy day at council.

Supporting Torfaen’s communities as they recover from this summer’s wildfires was central to discussions, with £50,000 pledged to help the Commoners Association with its work and the clean-up. Anthony also paid tribute to the farmers, firefighters and residents who helped tackle the fires.

Also on the agenda: solidarity with our Nepali community, remembering valued friends and colleagues, celebrating local achievements, and recognising the difference Flying Start makes to children and families across Torfaen. by @torfaenlabour

Wildfire update for Torfaen

The recent fires across South Wales have understandably caused concern for residents.

Cllr Anthony Hunt and councillors across affected areas have been working closely with residents, council teams and partner organisations as the situation develops.

Cllr Steve Evans has also reported a fire at the Birches in Upper Cwmbran, where he has been speaking with local residents. It is another reminder of why everyone needs to remain vigilant and follow the advice of South Wales Fire and Rescue Service.

Our thanks go to the firefighters working in extremely difficult conditions, and to council staff, farmers, emergency services and everyone else supporting the response.

Please do not light fires or take part in activities that could create a fire risk. If you see a new active fire, call 999.

We understand that people want to know what is happening, particularly when incidents are close to home. Please take care with information shared online and check that updates come from reliable, official sources. At times, information may not be available immediately for operational reasons while emergency services are responding.

Thank you to everyone helping to keep our communities safe. by @torfaenlabour

Opening yesterday's Council meeting, Council Leader Anthony Hunt paid tribute to three people who had passed away.

Former Councillor Stuart Cameron was fondly remembered for his service to Torfaen, first as an officer and later as an elected member.

Anthony then paid tribute to Chris Preston, husband of former Councillor Kelly Preston, following his death after a brave two-year battle with pancreatic cancer.

Anthony also reflected and expressed his sorrow at the passing of former MP Ann Widdecombe.

The entire council then stood together for a moment’s silence. Our thoughts are with the families, friends and loved ones of all those remembered. taken in Torfaen by @torfaenlabour

A brilliant day at the Big Event in Cwmbran!

Great weather, fantastic entertainment and thousands of people coming together to enjoy everything our community has to offer.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make it happen - from the volunteers and performers to the officers and organisers. Events like this don't happen by accident, and we're proud that the Labour-led Cwmbran Community Council continues to invest in bringing our community together. by @torfaenlabour
