Some photos that deserve to be looked at and I don't know why I never got posted them. These were all taken 9-13 years ago (crazy?!), back when I used to shoot portraits frequently. Now my portfolio primarily consists of museum artifact photography. 😂 by @toritoguchi

Feeling nostalgic since I can hear the sound of students practicing Eisā. Here's a throwback to 2018 Eisā during Shichigwachi / Kyu Bon in Ginoza with @kanna_seinenkai. taken in 宜野座村 by @toritoguchi

Meant to share this a while ago! Last year @yutomiyamoto and @mnm_inue of @troublemakersmag reached out to me about an old photo project from college (2015-2018) that I worked on titled, "Nikkei(jin)," during a time when I was exploring what it meant to be a diasporic Japanese person. It was such a pleasure to work with them for this photo story! 🫶🏻

I have moved away from the term Nikkei (or have a more expansive view of it) as I have grown and explored what it means to be Ryūkyūan/Shimanchu. But for the sake of this project, it includes folks who are Ainu, Ryukyuan, and Japanese. I think the conversations from the diaspora are important and it was fun and insightful to work on this project. It's kind of crazy that this is the 2nd iteration of this project being published, shoutout to Flux Hawaiʻi magazine for being the 1st! It was also nice reaching out to some old friends and have them featured again! Especially since some of these images are almost a decade old?! by @toritoguchi

This is @toritoguchi and today (February 19) is Day of Remembrance. It is a day where we reflect upon the consequences of Executive Order 9066, and one that I didn't grow up knowing about until I was in college. In remembering today, we want to reflect on the struggle and loss within our communities and how that dehumanization and discrimination is entangled with past and current struggles of various people(s) and groups both within the United States and outside of its borders.

I'm sharing my great-grandpa Toguchi's War Relocation Authority records and personal family images from within and after camp.

My great-grandpa Toguchi, and great-grandma Toguchi, were born on Oʻahu in 1914. My great-grandpa went to Okinawa at the 2 years old, and remained there for 12 years, returning home in 1928. My great-grandma growing up her entire life on Hawaiʻi island and Oʻahu. When Puʻuloa (Pearl Harbor) was attacked, he was married and had three children. In Hawaiʻi, he worked on a pineapple plantation, with dairy, and worked as a cook and baker.

For whatever reason, unknown to my family and I, my great-grandpa was arrested and taken to Sand Island on March, 1942. WRA archives shared that he showed some resentment about his internment at Sand Island. My family members were not educated nor important community leaders.

On Dec. 27, 1942, my great-grandparents and their children were sent on the SS Lurline with more than 430 other Hawaiʻi Japanese and Okinawans to the Jerome concentration camp in Arkansas. Although our communities weren't taken en masse, the community in Hawaiʻi were incarcerated both locally at home in US Justice camps like Honouliuli, Kilauea, etc., and taken to the Continental US to WRA and US Justice camps on various different ships.

They stayed in Jerome until 1944. There, he was given the Loyalty Questionnaire, where he answered "No" to the infamous Questions 27 and 28. I have included a short transcription from an interview, before he was denied clearance to leave, and sent to Tule Lake.

My family lived in Tule Lake until 1946, and returned home in March 1946. by @toritoguchi

Thank you to @uchinaasuka for the first photo! One of the rare photos of myself on my IG.

Although I love all things Ryūkyū, textiles are my probably my favorite thing to learn about. Historical "fun" fact, while Kasuri can now be found almost everywhere in Japan, the origin of most Ikat / Kasuri first came from Southeast Asia via the Ryūkyū Kingdom around the 12th or 13th century. It wasn't until after the invasion of the Ryukyu Kingdom in 1609 by the Satsuma clan and the introduction of cotton, that it began spreading more widely in Japan. In the Ryūkyūs, there are many Kasuri designs and some are from specific regions! 😄 And in Japan, there are lot of regional designs, too!

にふぇーでーびる to @mai_pon.pon for the Haebaru Kasuri experience! Mai's Kempi was on Haebaru Kasuri and it was so cool to see her in action! And although not pictured, it was fun doing this experience with @champloo.gurl @naobaop @d.humm_18. 😆

Trigger Warning: Flashing lights!

Thank you to @uchinaasuka @d.humm_18 @kanon_kinjo_yugafu and Take for allowing me to join them at the Kyan-aza, Haebaru Tsunahiki last year.

This tug-of-war is known as "Fight Tsunahiki" (喧嘩綱引き) and is held on the 6th month, 25th and 26th day of the Lunar calendar in the Kyan district of #Haebaru town. Tug-of-wars happen across many townships in Uchinā (Okinawa) but this one caught me by surprise because I've never seen people "fight" and clothes get ripped. 🤣 It's a very intense, but fun experience!

The video is calm but the last 6 months were intense in the best kinds of ways. I'm so grateful to have met so many wonderful people during a very short 1.3 year(s). Being in Okinawa went above and beyond any expectations I had!

Additionally, so many friends not captured. 😭🤣 taken in Okinawa|沖縄 by @toritoguchi
