Arrived in #Trapani earlier than intended. We were supposed to pass by Selinunte, an archeological site similar to the Valley of the Temples in Agrigiento, but we scrapped it last minute because they both seem similar. And frankly, these sites are a bit expensive to visit. Like €14 to €15 per person, so one site is enough. And truthfully at this point, the anxiety of driving around was getting to me, so we are taking it easy.

@chololaurel and I searched for the closest beach to our accomodation and we were glad to have found Spiaggia Piazza Vittorio Emanuele.

It’s a public beach in the city. It is sandy which allowed us to unroll our beach towels and lay comfortably on the sand. The water is shallow so it feels warmer, but still too cold for me! 😅 Lot’s of seaweed though that washes up to the shore.

We ended up staying here longer than we intended - warm sun, cool breeze, a relaxed atmosphere. taken in Trapani Sicilia by @tortorre

If by any chance I would get reborn, like those AI stories on Instagram and Facebook, I would like to be taken back to the Greek or Roman Era, when mankind was young and these types of places of worshiped were made and erected. So if you are into ancient Greek culture and you are in #Sicily, make the #ValleyOfTheTemples a priority on your list when visiting #Italy. by @tortorre

#Agrigiento Cathedral, formally known as Cattedrale Metropolitana di San Geraldo, sits at the very top of the historic old town of the city. It was a good 16-minute walk up hill from our accommodation.

A ticket is needed to enter the cathedral. We bought a €7 combined ticket that would entitle us to visit other “places of interest” in the area.

Anyhoo, this #cathedral was built during the Middle Ages and over the centuries it had Gothic, #Renaissance and #Baroque additions that when I saw the Apse, I was overwhelmed with so much flamboyant art. If you are a fan of Baroque architecture, come to #Sicily, Italy.

Entering here also entitled us to visit the “top” floors. One area gave us an expansive view of the valley of Agrigiento - all the way to the shore. I even saw the elevated highway which gave me a bit of anxiety because, I might pass through it when we leave the city.

When we reached the top of the clock tower, my fear of heights kicked in. Yes I do have it. It’s usually under control but sometimes an experience becomes a bit over whelming and it suddenly comes at me. Hence my nervous laughter in the video.

I was especially amazed with the Greek sarcophagus depicting the myth of Hippolytus and Phaedra. I have not heard of this myth until I got here. Quite tragic actually. Aphrodite cast a curse on Hippolytus by making Pheadra (stepmom) fall in-love with him. Hippolytus having rejected the advances of Phaedra, accuses him of attempting to rape her. When her husband, King Theseus, found out - he asked Poseidon to grant him a wish and cursed his son, leading to Hippolytus’ death. In the end, Phaedra’s treachery is discovered and she commits suicide by hanging herself. It’s like a sub-story on Reddit.

And with that, it is 12 noon and we’re off in search for some lunch. by @tortorre

After driving for a little over 3:30, including a pit stop at a gas station, @chololaurel and I arrived in #Agrigiento just in time for dinner.

We are having #Pinsa and Buffalo cheese on Tomates!

Pinsa is similar to Pizza but the dough is made of sourdough and is oval in shape. The size of this Pinsa is standard and it was a but too big even if Cholo and I shared it. Remarkably, it doesn’t feel as heavy as Pizza. 😉 taken in Agrigento, Sicily, Italy by @tortorre

Our final walk about in #Scicli. This reel started as soon as I stepped out of the Church of Saint John Evangelist. Check out my previous post to see the interior of it.

We then headed to St. Bartholomew’s Church. Unfortunately it was closed for the afternoon, but @chololaurel and I have managed to enter the previous evening. A mass has just finished and we were@able to enter. I wished I took some photos and pictures then. Maybe next time.

Can you see how amazing the surrounding is? Built between the junction of Three valleys , you see these thundering cliffs on the side surrounding everything. Quite a sight to be hold.

And with that our time here has ended and the journey in #Italy continues to Agrigiento. taken in Scicli by @tortorre

We’ve managed to catch one church open in #Scicli before all the churches were closing for siesta and it was the Church of St. John the Evangelist.

Beautiful #Baroque #church. Although the exterior looks quite imposing, inside tells a completely different story. It was actually quite bright, enhanced by the White, Blue and Gold stuccos. The fresco on the vault is absolutely gorgeous!

The main attraction here is the painting of a crucified Christ wearing a skirt. It is actually a burial robe of sorts and is a nod to Spanish iconography during the 17th century. taken in Scicli by @tortorre

We decided to spend the morning in #Scicli.

We found this town charming and on hindsight, we wished we went around here instead of going to Ragusa and Modica yesterday. Scicli is quaint. Easy to navigate. We situated our selves here for the past two nights and find it quite a shame not to get to know this town.

We had lunch at one of the restaurants along the piazza. I have been feasting on Mussels for the past few days. I wished they served this with Rice.

Lots of churches here as well - which is making me “churched out” to a certain degree. I’m glad that we decided to stay here this morning. I have been dealing witha bit of anxiety from driving around.

We were supposed to go to Romana del Casale, the archeological site that houses Roman Mosaics, which is a bit inlad. After doing come calculations, it would be dark when we get to our next destination and I didn’t want to be on the road that late in the evening. So, will save that for next time. taken in Scicli by @tortorre

We arrived at Ragusa, more specifically at Ibla, later than anticipated.

It was quiet when we got here. No more crowds, just a few tourists remain.

Just like Modica, #RagusaIbla was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1693 in Baroque fashion. That is why together with Scicli, Noto, Modica and Palazzolo Acreide are @Unesco World Heritage sites.

Apparently there are over 50 churches here in Ibla , which made me realize that this trip is becoming one big “visita iglesia”.

We had no intension of hitting all 50 churches because that will get us “churched out”. We headed to the Duomo of San Giorgio.

The interior of the cathedral, in general, is White and then you get these pop of Red in the altar, presbytery, the small chapels on the side - even the accents. Bringing a certain elegance, strength and valor. After all Saint George was a martyr who fought the “dragon”.

Will all that walking, @chololaurel and I were in dire need for some sustenance.

We then headed to one of the cafes in the piazza to have some coffee and #cannolo before we head back to the town of Scicli where we be-lit ourselves.

By the way, there is a garden here called the Giardino Ibleo. This actually offers amazing views of the Irminio River Valley of Ragusa. taken in Ragusa Ibla by @tortorre

We found our selves in Modica at around lunch time. We quickly realized that if we wanted to explore here, we don’t have enough time because we are also planning of visiting Ragusa Ibla, a town +- 30 mins. away.

It’s a good thing that we saw this “Baroque Train Tour” that would bring you around Modica and show the highlights of the town. It’s a good thing we did this, as Modica is a plateau and some highlights are found at the top of it.

The current Modica was rebuilt in #Baroque fashion after the earthquake of 1693 that destroyed much of Noto Valley.

As you can see in the reel, settlements are seen established well into the sides of the valley here creating a very interesting look and feel.

According to myth, #Modica was one of the three cities founded by Hercules in Sicily. Named after a Greek lady, Motia, who showed him where to find the Oxen guarded by the giant Geryon. taken in Modica, Sicilia, Italy by @tortorre
