It can be discouraging to look at the data and read there is a <15% chance of getting into vet school.

And for folks of color like me, it can be even more discouraging when you don’t see yourself represented in the field.

In undergrad, my pre health advisor told me I would never get into vet school and didn’t give me any sort of follow up or direction on where I could improve.

But here I am, 8 years later, an MBA earned, and 16 months left until vet school graduation.

So my pre health friends, I’m here to let you know that there is a seat for you in that 15% !

Maybe you’ll need to retake some classes, get more diverse clinical experience, or find mentorship.

Just because someone else gives up on you, doesn’t mean you have to give up on you!

Trust your passion, hustle, and know the future is what you make it.

You got this!💕

Today, on World Veterinary Day 2025, I pause to reflect on the journey that brought me here — a journey filled with challenges, growth, and profound gratitude. The theme this year, “Animal Health Takes a Team”, resonates deeply with me.

Becoming a veterinarian was never just a career choice; it was a calling. The path was not easy. The journey here was grueling, testing every fiber of my resilience. There were robust periods of doubt, of exhaustion, and of questioning my place in this demanding field. Yet, through it all, I was not alone.

I stand here today because of the unwavering support of my family, friends, mentors, teachers, coaches, and the incredible team of technicians, kennel attendants, receptionists, and fellow veterinarians who walked beside me. Each one played a pivotal role in shaping the veterinarian I am today.

Now, back home in LA, I am honored to serve the community that raised me. Every day, I witness the profound bond between humans and their animals — a connection that speaks volumes without words. Being a part of that bond, helping to heal and comfort, is a privilege I hold dear.

Leaving the @wearfigs sample sale today had me thinking about these moments from the retreat…

Ohhh, I wasn’t sad. I just needed a little @wearfigs in my life. 💗

Good people, good memories, a little time outside…and a VERY successful sample sale haul. 🤭

Amazing what a fresh pair of scrubs can do.

Look good. Feel good. Do good. 💗

For so long, life has been about becoming…

The next degree.
The next title.
The next goal.

And maybe the next chapter isn’t about becoming anyone at all.

Maybe it’s about discovering who I am now that so much has happened. No longer allowing what happened to me, to define me.

@wearfigs gave me a few days to go within under the guidance of @devibrown and other incredible healers.

And somehow, while going within, I met some awesome humans on the outs.

This was a retreat I’ll carry with me long after leaving Ojai

From paws to planes to pegasus! 🐾✈️

The reality of being clinician is I don’t always have the luxury of taking time off when I’d like.

I’ve learned that if I wait for the “perfect” time to pour back into myself, it may never come. So sometimes that means finishing a full day in the clinic, hopping on a red eye, and saying yes to experiences that fill my cup.

Because taking care of myself isn’t separate from taking care of my patients…it’s part of it.

Here’s to building a life where purpose and joy can exist in the same 24 hours. ❤️✈️🏇

Some days I still don’t believe it…
Then I get a thank you from a loving owner and a kiss from the pet they adore…and I remember.

Some days are heavy. I leave with a full heart… or a broken one.

And I’m still moving in my mission, walking in my purpose, and choosing my calling every single day.
