Q: what’s next on your tbr? 📚

I am picking up Broken Rivals by Tessa Bailey that I have heard so so many good things about! I love time travel on books and this looks like a combo time travel 🤝 romance mix that I think I’ll love 💕

Q: do you like trials in books? ✨

I loved the premise of this where a bunch of delinquent young-adults are joining a spy academy to earn their freedom after committing crimes and it felt like a fresh take on a classic idea. I enjoy a school setting and love a trial in books and this has elements of both which I enjoyed! It was also refreshing that for once this wasn’t a fantasy-based novel but involved more futuristic dystopian tech which made it feel refreshing from the huge amount of faerie/power-based ya out there at the moment. I will say the ending of this felt quite abrupt so I’m definitely intrigued to see when the sequel comes out how everything will be solved 👀I found the sections in the academy a little bit slow but the simulation elements to the story and the trial that takes place later on it the book really caught my attention and I sped through the second half of the book in one day! I found the characters a bit hard to keep track of in the beginning but again this got easier in the second half of the novel. Overall this was a good ya and I’m looking forward to fishing out what happens next 🫡

Having a baby this year has meant opening my eyes to all the cool kids books out there and this one is such a fun one to add to our collection! We get library books out each week to read so it felt like such a treat when @harpercollinsnz sent this one my way. The art style of this is just so lovely and I love the variance in the pictures and layout of the pages. It also has just the right amount of words per page which I’ve learnt is actually a really hard balance to hit in picture books 😅I love the story of the little bear-me-pigs and I can already tell this is definitely one that we’ll be reaching for and reading often! This is out later this month and I would highly recommend checking it out (I think it would make a great Christmas or birthday gift!!)

Q: what was the last romance you loved? 💕

I picked this up thinking it would be a cute and fun read and omg it surprised me! I adored this! I think this was a case of right book, right time as I absolutely flew through this. This is a second-chance romance after fmc Molly loses her memories of the past 6 years and wakes up to find out she is married to her high-school rival Aster, and booooooyy does she hate him 😅Molly agrees after some pushing from her high school best friend to give it a shot with him in the hopes of gaining back her memories. A lot of novels claim to be enemies to lovers but seeing small snippets of Molly and Aster back in school you can definitely see that they hated each other and I really like how those short scenes were scattered throughout the story. Aster makes some slightly questionable choices by hiding things about Molly’s current life from her out of fear of overwhelming or harming her which could be seen as controlling but I think that is a fair reaction to have just purely out of fear. Despite that, I think the main characters actually communicated really well with each other and it didn’t ever fall too fair into the miscommunication trope for me. I also found I adored the side characters in this and the strong relationships they had with Molly as they rallied around to support her. Overall this was a lovely romance and I think one that I would even consider rereading which I NEVER do with romances! Cute!

Mine was Once, Again, Always by Amanda Gayle which really surprised me with how much I loved it! I also continued reading The Keeper of the Lost Cities series which is a fantastic middle grade that I highly highly reccomend✨ I’m excited for October where I’ll definitely be trying to prioritise some spooky reads of my tbr - I might finally read It by Stephen King 👀 see my fable for a full list of ratings! 💕

Q: have you read any Agatha Christie books? 📚

I’ve read a couple of Agatha Christie’s but not any Miss Marple before. On the other hand I have read quite a few Lucy Foley books though so I was very interested to see what I’d think of this! I feel like Lucy has such a distinctive writing style, as does Agatha, so I wasn’t sure what to expect there but I really enjoyed that I felt like it was written in Lucy’s style with multiple POV’s and short chapters, but with the plot and suspense of the classic Agatha Christie style. This felt like a very classic whodunit story with a cast of suspicious characters with hidden backstories and motives very à la Agatha. I found the four POV’s really easy to follow and keep straight in my mind and the wintery hotel atmosphere provided a fun locked-room setting. Miss Marple was such a fun character to read about and I would have loved to have a POV from her perspective rather than viewing her through others but I think that was a really solid choice to keep it authentic to the original character. I will say that this did feel like a very classic plot and was not a groundbreaking or truly unique read plot wise but I don’t think that’s why you’d be reaching for this. Really enjoyed!

This memoir made me feel so many things - joy, anger, heartbreak, grief, and would do it all in one sitting. It took me a while to get through this, often I read it while sitting next to my four month old son so I feel like it hit me harder than it ever could. That being said, it was continually on my mind and I picked it up at some point nearly every day. Nic tells her story with honestly and raw emotion without placating positive platitudes and instead with true grit and determination which I really appreciated. This is not full of inspirational lyrical quotes but is full of unexpected humour and a real sense of community as Nic’s friends rally around and support her through it all. This was a fantastic read and a story that I think will stick with me for a long time.

Aside from the story itself, this is also just a beautifully printed book with lovely thick pages which gave it such a nice reading experience.
