🗽 Before America gave me a future, it gave me permission to imagine one.

I arrived as a refugee in the middle of ninth grade—the oldest of four children, trying to learn a new country while helping my family survive in it.

I worked night shifts at Denny’s and at a gas station, then caught a 7 a.m. bus to high school.

I did not yet know or could understand the words written in 1776.

But I was already waking up to their promise:

𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴.

America gave me the chance to imagine a life that had no precedent in my family.

That may be its greatest gift.

Not comfort.

Possibility.

On this nation’s 250th birthday, I feel not only gratitude, but responsibility:

To protect that possibility.

To extend it to others.

And to leave America more worthy of its promise than I found it.

Happy 250th birthday, America. 🇺🇸 taken in Los Altos Hills, California by @tparang
