It's International Women's Day on 8 March so this month's Throw-back-Thursday is about acknowledging wāhine Māori involved in the Māori Women's Welfare League. Here are a few old photos we have found to share. Photos by Ans Westra and the Whanganui Chronicle.

Founded in 1951, Te Ropu Wahine Māori Toko i te Ora (Māori Women’s Welfare League Inc.) is the only national charitable Māori Womens Organisation in Aotearoa. Since the League was founded, it remains principally concerned with the wellbeing of Māori women and their whānau. by @tpkgovt

Our thoughts remain with those who lost loved ones, were displaced, and all whānau, hapū, and iwi affected by Cyclone Gabrielle a year ago.

This week, we've heard some emotional stories of survival, and the struggles are by no means over for many whānau.
But the stories of resilience and opportunity that have also come from the experience have been heart-warming, and it is humbling to know Te Puni Kōkiri kaimahi played a small part in helping whānau in their time of need.

“The people are what I love most about this job”, said Dre Davis, @downernz apprentice water serviceman and cadet, when he was asked about his role and his placement as a cadet through our Cadetship Programme.

Te Puni Kōkiri Cadetship Programme supports employers to advance the careers and earnings of their Māori kaimahi. This is achieved through on-the-job training, wānanga, mentoring and supporting their Māori capability.

“I can’t really explain it – I have a feeling of self-belief. I’d advise others doing this to have fun. You have to enjoy the opportunity because you’re always going to be working, but your course is only so long so make the most of it.”

Read more about Dre's experience of our Cadetship Programme at Downer on our website.
