Wow what a day. These two gentleman had a great driver experience with our driver brothers Phil and Seb, of which ended up being a double header from Hythe too New Romney. A first for me! Was a great sight to see. I was a guard today acting as a traveling dispatcher on a closed to the public day. Before and after restoration of my @wilescodampfmaschinen D36, it was looking aged and tired before so with a little Brasso and elbow grease it almost looks as good as new! @milburymodels helped me with some of the parts, just need to rebuild the front end as bits are missing to hold the front steering rack on. Letting of some steam, I guess we all like to now and then. What are these? These are “Safety Valves”. automatically releases excess steam to prevent the boiler pressure from rising above its safe working limit. What’s all this noise about? This sports fans is a “blow down”. Which js a way of Removing sludge and sediment that collects at the bottom of the boiler. Controlling the concentration of dissolved solids in the boiler water. Helping prevent excessive scale or contamination inside the boiler. Drain cock action from locomotive number 1 “Green Goddess” what is a drain cock, glad you asked. When a steam locomotive is standing, steam inside the cylinders can condense into water. Water is essentially incompressible, whereas steam is compressible. If you admitted high-pressure steam into a cylinder containing a significant amount of water, the piston could try to compress that water. This can cause hydraulic locking, potentially damaging the cylinder covers, cylinder heads or other components. Sorry I’ve not been so active, this is for a couple of reasons but the main one is I have to follow company policy with social media posts, and understandably I can’t film while on shift. I did use a tripod most the time and stop and paused when safe to do so. To keep everyone happy I’ll be doing more videos outside of working hours! My first solo dispatcher shift today with Andy on loco 1 the Green Goddess. Met some loverly people and dogs today, had some great chats and laughs.
