weddings are alive
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
I made a decision this year to slow everything down and essentially not share much new work – and I haven't. I wanted to know what it felt like to let things marinate. I wanted to see what would change or if I'd learn anything new by doing the opposite of what I typically do - which is share new work as soon as possible. It also just feels better lately to let people have their memories before making them immediately public.

I'm still in the thick of it so I won't claim to know much, but I'll say that it's been a needed recalibration. It doesn't always feel great – I have moments of feeling like I'm falling behind or becoming some dreaded version of irrelevant (and maybe I am). But I feel so much more connected to the work and to the people I make the work for, in part because I don't feel the same urgency to make it visible all the time.

There's no “right” or “better” relationship to have with social media or sharing platforms. We all find our own balance, but stepping away for a time is *a* way.

So while work from this year marinates, here's some work from last year that's stayed with me.

I think there's an often undefined tension that a lot of people feel around their ability to connect with the things that matter to them.

For some people getting married, that tension is around wanting to be present so they can feel connected to their own wedding. They know they need to minimize and manage distractions in order to feel present, and they know they need to feel present in order to find meaning. They’re not trying to be dramatic about presence - they’re just trying to connect on a big day of their lives.

Some photographers feel this tension too - often around the pace of conventional wedding photography. They feel disconnected from their own work if they aren’t afforded the time they need to find meaning.

I think these types of people make a good team. There’s an understanding - we’re all just trying to connect to something important.

So while I search for the meaning this year, here’s a collection of work from a couple years ago.

Revisited work from 2023, prompted by seeing the incredible couple in the cover photo at a recent wedding.

'23 was a great year, and time changes the eye.

Wedding photographers are risk takers 🖤

I don't think there's anyone working in this field who doesn't feel some doubt around these decisions, but that vulnerability is all part of it.

The work is shifting. It's not a shift away from something but a fuller, more trusting, lean into the thing. Weddings {people} are fascinating, and people who allow a photographer freedom are magic.

Just for fun, slide 3 is raw SOC, no edit. Embrace ambient light.

There's exhaustion in the industry right now.

Photographers are feeling frustrated for a number of reasons.

But people are still getting married.

Important, formative, intense, connecting, life-affirming experiences are still happening, and we're still right there to see it. We have front row seats, in fact.

It feels like an uphill battle sometimes to make work that feels important, but that's part of the job.

Weddings aren't easy—but oh, are they alive.

In the uncertainty of a wedding day, I don't think most people are ultimately looking for certainty when it comes to their pictures. I think they're actually looking for safety. A photographer can project all the pressure they feel onto the day, or they can warmly invite people into the thrill of the unexpected. by @tracyjadephoto

I figured a few things out this year. I don't think I have the words yet, so I'll try with the pictures.

Tony and @melaniemahanna, you are a photographers' joy.

I think authorship in weddings is just letting yourself be alive behind the lens. We picked up a camera because we saw the world and we had something to say about it, or we were at least curious about it.

We don't have to give up those instincts in weddings.

We can let ourselves move and feel and react because what's in front of us is really special.
