Raising grass-finished beef pasture to plate-- and all the parts of this beautiful life in-between.

Stopped for a visit with my best old girl.

Today our world looked like sunshine, snow, soggy calves, squishy grass, and careful ponies on slippery cow trails. Tomorrow it will be an early trek to the butcher and a busy beef hand off in a parking lot. Full-circle beef production from these hills in southern Alberta.

Just had a first in 18 years of direct-marketing grass-finished beef from our ranch. I sent an invoice with a few options for local pickup opportunities and received a very polite email back-- "so sorry", she apologized, "I'm in Virginia, USA and thought the order would be shipped to my door."

We love the reach social media allows, people follow along with the ranch from all over the world. We love the demand for grass-finished beef sourced directly from the families who raise it. Every ranching community has a growing market for local beef. It's times like these when we appreciate how interconnected the big world has become.

Most, importantly we LOVE that year after year we get to feed people in our extended community, shake hands, give hugs, catch up on growing families, or mourn losses, when we meet up for beef deliveries.

So, all that to say. There's one box of beef- including ground, oxtail, and maple breakfast sausages- all packed and up for grabs. We're doing parking lot pick-up in Calgary for the next three weeks and welcome visitors to the ranch by appointment. Simply reach out with a message to order and we'll meet up with local beef and a hug!

Every season of our lives has revolved around good horses. It would be hard to choose a favourite stage of life, or the horses that went with it. This one has got Huey and Dually as our main men. We're relying on them for ranching during the week, and each one of them has won a round of High School Rodeo in the last couple weekends. Not a day goes by we don't thank our lucky stars for the horses who are the centre of our universe.

Huey-- covering some ground checking cows and packing mineral out in the hills. Fall colours are muted this year, but the golden light and warm breeze make this place glow.

Taking a moment between storms to check grass and ride through your grass-finished beef. Our backyard is made up of coulees and native grassland that hold the moisture where the mountains and hills roll into the prairie.

When you source ranch-direct, grassfed beef you become an integral part of this prairie ecosystem.

"I dislike the thought that some animal has been made miserable to feed me. If I am going to eat meat, I want it to be from an animal that has lived a pleasant, uncrowded life outdoors, on bountiful pasture, with good water nearby and trees for shade." -Wendell Berry

"A feminist is anyone who recognizes the equality and full humanity of women and men." -Gloria Steinem

The incredible people the world has lost recently...There's a shift in the universe without Dolly Parton, Wendell Berry, and Gloria Steinem. Now if we can all take a little bit of their passion and perspective and carry it forward. Upon reflection, I was so fortunate to grow up in a household with a long-time Ms. magazine subscription. And, even more so, that our daughter is living in a world where the fundamental fights of feminism seem abstract to her generation.

However, we can't take for granted that the world will be left better than we found it. That takes real work and everyday diligence to what is going on around us, because like Gloria said, "empathy is the most radical of human emotions." Look out for one another. Speak truth to power. Consider community, and humanity, when helping to shape policy and opportunity. Use your voice, and vote, remembering that: "Whenever one person speaks up and says, ' Wait a minute, this is wrong,' it helps other people do the same."

For Wendell Berry. Take yourself to the fields that have never seen a plow. The fields where water sits long after the rain. Where so many kinds of grass and shrubs and flowers grow, it's impossible to know them all by name. Maybe bring a good dog. Give thanks for the sun and the clouds. Give thanks for the wisdom of the poets who make you take pause. The words that are guidance and kinship. The words that you can carry with you, into the fields.

In honor of his passing, look up a Wendell Berry poem. You will be better for it. Especially if it remains with you and you bring it to the pasture.

Ranch updates are few and far between these days! We've been spending lots of time out of reception or with hands simply too full to pick up a phone. Top that off with a week of email malfunction and communications felt pretty quiet around here.

Now we're powered up for fall! Email is fully-functioning and butcher dates resume. Add back-to-school on top of hockey and rodeo. It's full on around here! And I love all of it. What a blessing to have busy lives so full of good things.

If you're waiting to hear back from me, send your emails again or give me a shout. Hope you all tackle this new season with the enthusiasm of a herd of yearlings who just crashed a gate!

Beef jerky makes the best saddle bag lunch! Or hockey bag snack, or rodeo snack, or school lunch treat...

Grassfed, Grass-finished Beef, prepared in small batches by our artisan butcher. We've got a little bit stocked up to share or reserve by pre-order.
