PLEASE SPARE ME A MINUTE
“My children are going to an excellent school. In fact, it’s the best in the state/country” —so good.
“I’ve left Nigeria/Africa, and my kids are enrolled in schools abroad” - This is good, too.

But wait, my friend.
Can you cast your mind back to the time you went to school and the quality of education? What of the quality of teachers?
Last year, I started feeling a significant burden to ensure that the African educational system is upheld with a substantial focus on teachers and trainers. My team and I went head-deep into research and started asking ourselves some profound questions.

For the past year, we’ve worked tirelessly on a project close to my heart: supporting and empowering African teachers through our Train the Trainer program @traindtrainer.
Education is evolving globally. Are our teachers evolving at this pace? Is our curriculum evolving? Sadly, the degree to which our teachers evolve also determines the degree to which our students evolve.

This is a bit of what this program is all about - to equip teachers with cutting-edge pedagogical skills, technology integration, and support networks.
We can turn this vicious cycle into a virtuous cycle. We can’t remain complacent just because some of us have left ‘home’ or ‘we are comfortable’.
There’s more to live for. I don’t know where all this would lead to. I don’t even have it all figured out, but I know my heart beats for Africa, and our educational system and teachers are not left out.

I’ve often shared that I was denied the chance to attend the Cowbell Mathematics Competition in primary school because I didn’t attend a particular teacher’s private lesson.

Not because I wasn’t capable.
Not because I wasn’t prepared.But because access had a price tag.
The teacher gave his private lesson students the screening test in advance.
So the playing field was never level.
The outcome was predetermined.

My dear educators, we must be careful.
The classroom is not a marketplace.
Access to opportunity must never depend on private loyalty.
When we withhold opportunity from a child, we are not just affecting a competition. We are shaping how that child sees fairness, authority, and possibility.
Some children shrink after moments like that. Some children rebel. And some, by grace, turn pain into purpose.
But no child should ever have to recover from an educator.

The rot may be deep. But it stops with us.
This is one of the reasons I do what I do with TrainDTrainer.

Africa is richly endowed, but its most powerful resource is not oil, gold, land, or minerals.

It is its people.

And people thrive when they receive an education that does more than prepare them for examinations. Quality education equips children and young people to think critically, communicate confidently, create solutions, participate in society, and build livelihoods.

Every teacher empowered, every classroom improved, every book placed in a child’s hands and every learner supported is an investment in Africa’s long-term progress.

Because when education is accessible, relevant, inclusive and high-quality, its impact reaches far beyond the school gate:

- Families gain stronger economic opportunities

- Communities benefit from informed leadership

- Businesses gain skilled talent

- Innovation becomes locally driven

- Nations build more resilient futures

The question is no longer whether Africa has potential. The question is whether we will invest boldly enough in the systems that help that potential flourish.

Quality education is not a social expense. It is Africa’s greatest long-term investment.

We speak often about Africa's potential. Perhaps we should speak more about Africa's formation.

Potential is not self-executing. A young population does not automatically become a skilled population. Intelligence does not automatically become capability. Talent does not automatically become institution. And natural wealth does not automatically become collective prosperity.

Between what a people possess and what a people become is formation.
That is the space we are deeply interested in at TrainDTrainer.
Because long before capability shows up in an economy, an institution or a nation, somebody has been forming the human being who will carry it, and very often, somewhere in that story, there was a teacher.

Perhaps the conversation about Africa's future needs to begin much earlier than we think.

Not with what Africa has, but with who Africa is forming.

Did they learn, or did you only teach?

Your lesson can be well planned, the slides can be beautiful, the teacher can explain confidently, and the classroom can even be quiet, but none of these automatically means learning happened.

The real evidence of teaching is not simply that the content was delivered. It is that learners can understand it, connect with it, question it, practise it, and apply it.

Sometimes, the shift a classroom needs is not another worksheet, stricter rules, or more content to cover. Sometimes, it is one reflective question from the teacher:

“What did my learners actually take away from this lesson?” Did they feel safe enough to ask questions? Did they have a chance to participate? Did the lesson meet them at their current level? Did feedback help them improve, or only point out what they got wrong?

Teaching becomes more powerful when we move from “I have taught the topic” to “My learners are making progress.” No teacher gets it perfect every day. But reflective teachers create room for better learning every day.

If we want more confident, curious, resilient, and capable learners, we must look beyond the learner alone. Sometimes, the most important change begins with the teacher.

Not because teachers are to blame for every learning challenge, but because teachers hold enormous influence over the atmosphere of a classroom. Their expectations shape confidence. Their words shape participation. Their methods shape whether learning feels possible or intimidating.

A learner does not only respond to what is taught. They respond to how they are seen. When a teacher moves:

From delivering lessons to checking for understanding,

From control to connection,

From having all the answers to continuous learning,

From criticism to constructive feedback,

Learners are more likely to engage, ask questions, recover from mistakes, and believe in their own potential. The goal is not for teachers to become perfect. The goal is to become more reflective, more responsive, and more intentional.

Because sometimes the breakthrough we are waiting for in the learner starts with a shift in the adult leading the room.

At TrainDTrainer, we do not create courses just to fill a curriculum.

We ask a deeper question: What has to change inside a teacher so something meaningful can change inside a child?

Because information can change minds, but when teachers are transformed: more reflective, intentional, empathetic, and equipped, they create learning spaces that shape confidence, character, curiosity, and possibility.

That impact does not end with one lesson, one learner, or one classroom.

TEAM: Together Everyone Achieves More. ❤️
In the heat of very deep work, music came on and, somehow, everybody forgot they had jobs. 😂
One person moved and another joined. Please don’t ask me who moved first. 😂 Before we knew it, professionalism had temporarily left the building. 😭😂

I love moments like this because we work hard, think deeply and build serious things. Thankfully, we are not serious people all the time. 😂❤️
We laugh hard, we gather well and, my God, we eat well. 😂😂😂 There are many things we haven’t figured out yet. But you see food and a heart for the people we are building for? Those two, you can never question. 😂

There is something beautiful about building important things with people you can also be human with. We gather around ideas, problems, possibilities and, with remarkable consistency, food. 😂
This is only about one-eighth of the people building across KOJ and TrainDTrainer, but I hope that as we grow, we never become too big for this: eating together, laughing loudly, bursting a move and remembering that institutions are ultimately built by human beings.

The work matters. But so do the memories we make while doing it.
And yes, before HR sees this, I promise everyone returned to their duty posts after bursting a move. 😂😂😂

A student can now get an answer in seconds. But can they explain it, question it, or apply it in real life?

That is the conversation education needs to have.

AI can help students brainstorm, revise, practise, research, and receive support outside the classroom. Used well, it can be a powerful learning companion.

But when every answer is one prompt away, the value of education cannot be limited to getting the “right” answer.

Students still need to learn how to:

- Think critically before accepting information

- Ask questions that lead to deeper understanding

- Recognise bias, misinformation, and weak arguments

- Communicate ideas in their own voice

- Build confidence through effort, not shortcuts

AI should not remove the productive struggle that helps learning stick.

The goal is not to make students dependent on technology. The goal is to help them use technology wisely, while becoming independent, thoughtful, and capable learners.

AI is changing education, but perhaps not in the way we first imagined. The biggest question is not whether AI will replace teachers.

It is whether we are helping students become stronger thinkers in a world where answers are available in seconds.

AI can write an essay, summarise a chapter, create revision questions, and provide instant feedback. But it cannot replace the internal work of learning: asking thoughtful questions, wrestling with difficult ideas, developing judgement, collaborating with others, and building confidence through effort.

That is why education must evolve beyond memorising information.

Students need to learn how to:

Ask better questions

Check facts and identify bias

Explain their own reasoning

Use AI ethically and responsibly

Turn information into original thinking

The goal is not to raise learners who can produce polished answers with a prompt.

The goal is to raise learners who can think, decide, adapt, and lead, whether AI is available or not.

The real question about AI in education is this: are we using it to make learning easier, or to make learners stronger?

Perhaps AI is forcing education to confront a question we should have asked a long time ago:
What is a teacher actually for?
For years, we have measured teachers by how much they can carry. We mean lesson notes, marking, reports, resources, records, administration, content delivery.
Then technology arrives and begins doing some of those things in seconds.
That does not make the teacher smaller.
It forces us to look again at where their greatest value has always been.
Maybe the future of teaching is not about proving that humans can do what machines can do.
Maybe it is about becoming exceptional at what we should never have reduced to a task in the first place.
AI may change the work of the teacher. It may also help us rediscover the worth of one.
